Sustainable fish and chips: what to look for

What to ask about where the fish comes from.

Why it matters

Fish stocks need managing so there are enough fish for the future. Some cod and haddock fisheries are well managed; others have been overfished in the past.

The MSC blue label

The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certifies fisheries that meet its standard for sustainable fishing. Food carrying the blue MSC label can be traced back to a certified fishery.

Questions to ask your caterer

  • Where does your cod or haddock come from?
  • Is it from a certified sustainable fishery?
  • Do you use a fish supplier who can trace the source?

Why it’s complicated

Whether a fish is sustainable depends on the species, where it was caught, how it was caught and how well that fishery is managed. Cod from one area can be well managed while cod from another is not. That’s why labels and traceability matter more than the species name alone.

Other things you can do

  • Ask your caterer about their fish supplier
  • Keep portions sensible to reduce waste
  • Order accurate numbers
  • Choose recyclable or compostable packaging where you can

Where to find out more

The Marine Stewardship Council’s website explains its standard and lets you look up certified fisheries. The Marine Conservation Society also publishes guidance on choosing seafood.

Packaging and waste

Sustainability isn’t just about the fish. At events, think about packaging and bins. Paper and cardboard are easier to recycle when they’re not too greasy, so have separate bins for food waste if you can. Ask your caterer what packaging they use.

Oil

Used cooking oil should never go down a drain. Caterers take it away and it’s usually collected for recycling, for example into biodiesel. Ask your caterer how they handle it if your venue asks.

Quick answers

What does the MSC label mean?

That the fish comes from a fishery certified against the MSC’s sustainability standard.

Is cod sustainable?

It depends on where and how it’s caught. Ask about the source.
