Christmas party fish and chips in Stanmore, fried fresh

A Christmas party does not have to mean another turkey dinner. Hot fish and chips on a cold December day is festive in its own way. We’re frequently asked to cater depot Christmas treats and work Christmas parties, serving mushy peas, cod and chips and gravy.

Prices and what affects them

The same numbers can mean different prices, depending on:

  • Any minimum charge
  • How many people are eating
  • The day of the week
  • Access and parking

Dates make a difference: peak summer weekends and Christmas party Fridays book up first. Ask about your date early.

Getting an accurate quote

To speed things up, tell us:

  • The date and when you’d like to eat
  • Expected numbers
  • Where the van would park
  • The address or venue name

Not sure of numbers yet? That is fine: give us a rough idea and the date, and we’ll quote on that. To start, send us your details through our quote form.

Common questions in Stanmore

Is Stanmore close to London?

About 52 miles from central London, and well within our area.

Do you come to venues in the North Wessex Downs National Landscape?

Yes. Some venues there have rules about vehicles and ground, so check with yours. We’ll follow the site rules.

What areas do you cover?

We take the van across London and the South East, including West Berkshire. See all areas.

Do you take everything away?

We clear the van’s area after service. Let us know about bins for guests.

Can you serve children?

Children are very welcome. Let us know numbers, and we’ll plan for them.

What do you bring?

Everything is cooked in the van. Tell us about power, water and bins at the site.

How soon do we need to book?

Early, particularly for summer Saturdays and Christmas party Fridays. Even at short notice, it is worth asking.

Is the food cooked at the event?

Yes. Everything is fried fresh in the van, then handed over hot from the hatch.

About the food

Cod and chips

Cod is the classic: mild, white and flaky, and it is what most people in the south ask for. It is battered and fried to order.

Sausage and chips

A sausage and chips is the chip-shop classic for younger guests and fish-dodgers, especially with curry sauce.

Cannot we just order from the chip shop?

You could do a chip-shop run for everyone yourself, but it rarely works for a crowd. By the time you’ve queued, paid and driven back, the batter has gone soft. With a van, it is fried on the spot.

If you do order from a chip shop, ring well ahead and collect as close to eating time as you can. For anything more than a handful of people, a van is normally the easier option.

Stanmore is one of 155 places in West Berkshire where we bring the van. Our bookings stretch from Stanmore to Reading (15 miles away).

If you are organising a Christmas fair for a school like Beedon C.E. (Controlled) Primary School, hot fish and chips goes down well. Stanmore is within about 4 miles of the North Wessex Downs National Landscape; in winter, rural routes need a bit more planning.

The process

We work to your timings. If the day runs behind, we simply start frying a little later, so the food is still fresh when it is served. By about 4:00pm in late December, it is dark in Stanmore; park the van where there’s good light, and keep the walk short.

  1. First, tell us about your Christmas party.
  2. You get an availability check and a clear quote.
  3. Timings and the van’s spot are agreed in advance.
  4. On the day, we park up and fry fresh for your guests.
  5. Everything goes out hot from the hatch, and we pack up afterwards.

Before we arrive

  • Think about a gazebo by the van in case of rain
  • Make sure the van can get in
  • Keep space clear for guests at the hatch
