What happens on the day

Expect a friendly, organised set-up. We agree arrival and serving times in advance, park on the agreed spot, and get on with frying and serving. By about 3:50pm in late December, it’s dark in Stansted; park the van where there is good light.

  1. Send us your date, numbers and address.
  2. We check the route in and send a price.
  3. We arrive early to park and heat the fryers.
  4. Fish goes into the batter and straight into the fryer, to order.
  5. Service is straight from the hatch, then we pack up.

Before you choose a spot

Before the day, we’ll agree where the van parks. A good spot ticks these boxes:

  • A level hardstanding, drive or firm lawn
  • A lit spot if service runs after dark
  • Room in front of the hatch for a queue

If you’re unsure, send a picture of the space and the way in, and we will say what we think before you book.

Prices and what affects them

Each booking is quoted on its own, and the price depends on a few things:

  • Travel, tolls and road charges
  • The number of meals
  • Peak dates such as summer Saturdays
  • Service time

When you compare quotes, check what each one includes: hours, menu, travel, minimum charge and VAT. We set ours out clearly.

What to tell us

You don’t need everything decided to ask for a quote, but these help:

  • The spot you have in mind for the van
  • Rough numbers for adults and children
  • A picture of where the van would go
  • Access details such as gates and narrow lanes

To get a price, use our quote form. Tell us about your Christmas party in Stansted, and we’ll check the date and send a price.

What comes out of the fryer

Mushy peas

Mushy peas are made from dried marrowfat peas, soaked and cooked until soft. They’re the side most people expect.

Cod and chips

Cod is the classic: mild, white and flaky, and it is what most people in the south ask for. It’s battered and fried to order, so it is crisp when it reaches you.

Allergies and dietary needs

Nearly every event has some special diets. To look after them:

  • Think about a gazebo or covered doorway
  • Agree the spot with the venue
  • Plan an alternative for anyone we cannot cater for
  • Choose a lit spot for the van

Send people out in groups.

Paper hats and crackers on the tables add to the fun.

Christmas catering near Stansted

Stansted is about 6 miles north-east of Sevenoaks, in Kent. Whether your Christmas party is in the middle of Stansted or on the outskirts, the service works the same way: fish and chips fried to order, served hot and quoted clearly. We cover 922 places in Kent. We serve events right across the region, from Stansted to London (about 20 miles away).

A winter fair at a school like Wrotham School gets dark early, so hot food from a van is popular. Christmas fairs at a church such as Church of St Mary can book the van as a hot-food stall. Stansted is within about 6 miles of the Kent Downs National Landscape, where winter lanes can be dark and narrow, so tell us about the route.

Common questions in Stansted

Is Stansted too small for a chip van?

Not at all. We serve villages and hamlets as well as towns. Let us know about access and parking.

Which station is closest to Stansted?

Borough Green & Wrotham station, about 2.9 miles south of the centre.

Do you clear up afterwards?

The pitch is left as we found it. It helps to have bins near the hatch.

Is grass a problem?

Frequently, if the ground is firm and dry. Soft, wet ground can trap any vehicle, so plan a back-up spot.

What if the weather’s bad?

The weather doesn’t stop the van, because the fryers are inside. Very soft ground can be a problem, so plan a back-up spot on a hard surface.

How do you handle allergies?

Tell us about allergies when you book, and we will tell you what’s in each item and what we can offer.

When do Christmas bookings fill up?

As soon as you have a date.

How long will the queue be?

Keeping choices simple and sending people up in groups helps. We will talk it through when we quote.

A fish and chip van or other catering?

A cold buffet does not feel festive. Hot fish and chips is. Fish and chip van prices depend on the booking. A short service and a long afternoon’s trading are very different bookings. Your quote spells it all out.

Why us?

  • Cod, haddock, sausages and pies
  • Fish and chips fried fresh on site
  • Rain does not stop the fryers
  • No kitchen, no crockery, no washing up

Organising for someone else?

Many venues set rules for catering vans: where a van can park, access times and the paperwork they want. Tell us what your venue needs and we will work through them with you.

If you are organising for someone else, such as a wedding planner, an office manager or a fête committee, we’re happy to deal with you and the venue directly. It keeps things simple.
