The Holt in December: what to know

The Holt is about 4 miles north-east of Woodley, in Wokingham. From the centre of The Holt to the outskirts, the service works the same way: fresh frying, hot food from the hatch and a clear price. We cover all 35 towns and villages across Wokingham. You can also see our page for Reading, about 7 miles away.

A winter fair at a school like Robert Piggott CofE Infant School gets dark early, so hot food from a van is popular.

This part of Wokingham takes in RG10, and we can serve your Christmas party anywhere in it. That could mean a Christmas party at a home on Blakes Lane and Bath Road or the roads around them, as long as there is somewhere for the van. If your venue is just outside The Holt, we also cover Kiln Green (1 mile east), Hare Hatch (1 mile south-west), Ruscombe (2 miles south-west), Waltham St Lawrence (2 miles south-east) and Twyford (2 miles south-west). Within a short drive, we also cover Reading (7 miles south-west), Wokingham (6 miles south), Woodley (4 miles south-west), Earley (6 miles south-west), Crowthorne (9 miles south) and Lower Earley (6 miles south-west).

A little further out are Frazer Nash Archives (3.2 miles north-west) and St Mark's Hospital (4.4 miles north-east). Open spaces near The Holt include Weycock Hill and Hurley Chalk Pit.

Diets, allergies and planning

Dietary needs are easiest to plan with some notice. Our advice:

  • Check the van can park on site
  • Make sure the van and queue are well lit
  • Arrange something for anyone with needs we can’t meet
  • December Fridays go first: book early

When service is finished, we pack up.

Some teams collect for a local charity on the day.

The Holt questions

Is The Holt too small for a chip van?

No, we come to small places too. Tell us about lanes, gates and the ground.

How far is The Holt from London?

Roughly 32 miles from the centre of London, and we cover it as standard.

Will the weather be a problem?

We cook inside the van, so the weather doesn’t stop us. Keep the van close to the door.

Do you bring everything you need?

The van comes fully equipped to cook. You just need a suitable spot and permission.

Can you cook in the rain?

We cook inside the van, so rain doesn’t stop us. It is worth planning some cover for the queue.

When should we book?

As early as you can, especially for summer weekends and December. Ask about your date even if it’s soon.

When do Christmas bookings fill up?

As early as possible. Fridays in December book up first.

Do you cater Christmas fairs?

Yes, and hot food goes down well in December. Get in touch with the date.

Planning the van’s spot

If a spot isn’t suitable, we will tell you, and help find another. The main points are:

  • A lit spot if service runs after dark
  • A clear way in, with no low branches, cables or narrow gates
  • A level hardstanding, drive or firm lawn

Not sure about the spot? Send us a photo and we will tell you honestly.

Our booking checklist

A fish and chip van or other catering?

Hog roasts are a Christmas favourite, but it’s one dish. A chip van gives a choice. When you compare quotes, check what each one includes: service time, menu, travel, any minimum and VAT. Our quotes spell it all out.

What you get with us

  • All the chip-shop extras
  • No surprises in your quote
  • Fish and chips fried fresh on site
  • Quick service from the hatch

See our pricing or our guide to van hire costs.

Takeaway run or book a van?

Not sure whether to order in or book a van? Consider your numbers and how fresh you want it. Ask us for a quote and compare.

Ordering in from a local chip shop is an option. The problem is timing: big orders take a long time, and the food is cooling while it travels. A van cooks in front of your guests instead.

Food your guests will love

Pie and chips

A pie and chips is proper comfort food, and it is a favourite in colder months.

Curry sauce

The chip shop’s own curry sauce is mild and a little sweet, perfect with chips or a sausage.

  • Fried fresh to order in the van at your event
  • Cod, haddock and chips, sausages and pies
  • The van comes to you: homes, venues, workplaces and fields
  • Served at the time you choose, from the hatch
