How our film set catering works in Didcot

Location shoots, commercials and wrap parties all suit a chip van. We are often asked to cater fashion shoots on location and wrap celebrations, with sausage and chips, mushy peas and pie and chips.

In a town like Didcot, unit bases are often in car parks, school grounds or yards. The van suits any of them. Everything we need comes with the van, and we pack up and leave the spot as we found it.

The process

We get there well before service, park the van and get the fryers going. Crew normally gather round the hatch as soon as we open. Light in Didcot lasts until about 9:25pm at midsummer; for early or late service, base needs lighting.

  1. Start with three things: the date, the place and a rough headcount.
  2. Show us where the van would go, and we’ll confirm it works.
  3. Closer to the day, we confirm the arrival time and serving time.
  4. We park, open the hatch and start frying for the crew.
  5. Once the last portion is out, we pack up and go.

Getting ready for the day

  • Check the way in for low branches, cables and narrow gates
  • Plan a bit of cover near the hatch if rain is likely
  • Check the venue or landowner is happy for the van to park

Organising for someone else?

For repeat bookings, such as regular staff lunches or annual fairs, let us know your dates early, so we can hold the date.

Organising a club, school or community event in Didcot? Fish and chips is a reliable crowd-pleaser. Tell us about the event and we will take it from there.

Cannot we just order from the chip shop?

DIY food keeps costs down, but the host spends the event serving. With a fish and chip van, you get hot food without the work.

Some hosts try a takeaway order. The problem is timing: big orders take a long time, and the food is cooling while it travels. A van cooks in front of your crew instead.

Diets, allergies and planning

Good planning keeps every guest safe and happy. Here’s how:

  • Share the base location and route
  • Add an allergy question to crew forms
  • Send final numbers the day before
  • Send allergies to us in writing

Lunch is planned around the call sheet, and a contact keeps us updated.

FAQs for Didcot

Which station is closest to Didcot?

Didcot has its own station: Didcot Parkway station.

Is Didcot close to London?

About 50 miles from central London, and we cover it as standard.

Do you do anything other than fish?

We serve sausages and pies as well as fish. Let us know about any other dietary needs and we’ll be honest about what’s possible.

Can you cook in the rain?

The weather doesn’t stop the van, because the fryers are inside. Very soft ground can be a problem, so plan a back-up spot on a hard surface.

Can you feed supporting artists too?

Yes. Let us know total numbers.

Can you park at the unit base?

Usually, if there is level, firm ground. We will agree the spot with your location manager.

Can you go on a lawn or field?

Frequently, if the ground is firm and dry. After heavy rain, soft grass can be a problem for any vehicle, so have a hard-surface back-up.

Do you clear up afterwards?

We pack up and leave the pitch tidy when service is finished. Let us know about bins for crew.

Planning the van’s spot

Plenty of places work for the van, but there are a few things to check:

  • A route in the van can manage, with no low branches or tight lanes
  • Agreement from the location manager and landowner
  • A level, firm spot at the unit base

If in doubt, send us a picture of the spot and we’ll advise before you book.
