Film set catering in East End, fried fresh

We need a level, firm spot at base, and a route the van can manage. Typical bookings include commercials and music videos and live events and broadcasts, with cod and chips, mushy peas and pie and chips.

For a shoot in a place like East End, tracks and soft ground need checking with locations. Food is served straight from the hatch, so it’s hot and generous, and the queue keeps moving.

DIY versus a fish and chip van

Some hosts try a takeaway order. Large orders are slow, and the food cools in the bags. A van cooks in front of your crew instead.

A DIY buffet works for small groups. For larger numbers, or when you want hot food, a van takes the pressure off, and you get to enjoy the day.

How the day works

On the day, we park up on the agreed spot, set up and heat the fryers. Then everything is fried to order, timed around your shoot. Winter shoots near East End chase the light, which goes at about 4:00pm in December, so lunch at base is frequently in daylight but a wrap meal is not.

  1. We start with the location, call times and crew numbers.
  2. We check the route and the unit base and send a price.
  3. We arrange the van’s spot at the unit base with locations.
  4. We serve hot from the hatch when lunch is called.
  5. Afterwards we pack up and leave the unit base clean.

Preparing for the day

  • Leave room in front of the hatch for a queue
  • Check the way in for low branches, cables and narrow gates
  • Confirm the van is allowed on site

How to compare vans

Shooting in East End: unit bases and access

East End is about 3 miles north-east of Lymington, in Hampshire. From the centre of East End to the outskirts, the service works the same way: fish and chips fried to order, served hot and quoted clearly. East End is one of 683 places in Hampshire where we bring the van. We serve events right across the region, from East End to Southampton (11 miles away).

Crew coming by rail can use the station: Lymington Pier station is about 2.3 miles away. East End is within about 4 miles of the New Forest National Park, and locations in protected landscapes frequently have rules about vehicles. With the sea within about 4 miles, coastal shoots need a sheltered base, so plan where crew will queue.

Wherever your shoot is in SO41, we can fry fresh for your crew, from busy streets to quiet lanes. From Rowes Lane, Norleywood Road and Lymington Road or a nearby road, we can park up and fry there. If your venue is just outside East End, we also cover Norleywood (1 mile north-west), Thorns Beach (2 miles east), Hamstead (4 miles south-east), Cranmore (5 miles south) and Bouldnor (5 miles south). Within a short drive, we also cover Gosport (15 miles east), Eastleigh (15 miles north-east), Fareham (14 miles north-east), Totton (10 miles north), Chandler's Ford (15 miles north) and Hedge End (13 miles north-east).

Nearby you’ll also find Yarmouth Castle (4.7 miles south) and Lymington New Forest Hospital (2.7 miles west). Open spaces near East End include Boldre Foreshore.

The right spot keeps everyone safe and the service smooth. We look for:

  • Lighting for early or late service

FAQs for East End

What’s the nearest station to East End?

Lymington Pier station, about 2.3 miles south-west of the centre.

Do you come out to small places like East End?

Not at all. We serve villages and hamlets as well as towns. Tell us about lanes, gates and the ground.

Can you serve children?

Yes, children are easy to cater for. Let us know numbers, and we’ll include them in the plan.

What food do you serve?

Chip-shop favourites: cod or haddock and chips, sausages and pies, with mushy peas, curry sauce and gravy. See the menu.

Where do you take the van?

London and the South East: Kent, Surrey, Sussex, Hampshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire and the Isle of Wight.

What if the weather’s bad?

We carry on in the rain, because the fryers are inside. Soft ground after heavy rain is the bigger issue, so have a hard-surface spot in mind.

Does the batter contain gluten?

No, not as standard: batter is generally made with wheat flour. Let us know and we’ll tell you what we can do.

Do you do anything other than fish?

Sausage and chips and pie and chips are on the menu. Let us know about any other dietary needs and we’ll tell you what we can offer.

Organising for someone else?

Organising a club, school or community event in East End? A fish and chip van draws people in and almost everyone likes it. Tell us about the event and we will take it from there.

For big groups, the service window matters, so we can plan service to match. Staggering groups helps a lot.

Looking after everyone

With a bit of planning, dietary needs are easier to handle. Here are a few tips:

  • Put allergy details in writing
  • Agree how the base is left
  • Ensure we can reach locations on the day
  • Update numbers if they change

We arrive at base in good time and set up.

A gazebo by the van keeps the line dry.

  • Fried fresh to order in the van at your event
  • Cod, haddock and chips, sausages and pies
  • The van comes to you: homes, venues, workplaces and fields
  • Served at the time you choose, from the hatch
