Film set catering in Lake, fried fresh

Shoot days are long, and a hot lunch on time matters. A fish and chip van parks at the unit base and fries to order. We’re often asked to cater outside broadcasts and end-of-shoot parties, serving mushy peas, haddock and chips and pie and chips.

For a location shoot near Lake, base might be in a field or farmyard, so ground conditions matter. We cook inside the van, right where your crew are, and the food reaches them hot and crisp.

Location catering around Lake

Lake is about 1 mile south-west of Sandown, in the Isle of Wight. In and around Lake, the van can serve from a drive, a yard, a car park or a firm field, close to your crew. Lake is one of 125 towns and villages in the Isle of Wight we cover. We serve events right across the region, from Lake to Southampton (21 miles away).

Lake is on or near the A3055, good for unit base access. For crew arriving by train, Lake station is in Lake itself. The coast is within about 2 miles of Lake, and coastal unit bases can be exposed.

For shoots in PO36 and PO37, we just need to know where the van can park. Local streets include Lea Road, New Road and Percy Road; a shoot on any of them works well with a drive or nearby car park. With the A3055 close by, Lake is simple for us to get to for your shoot. Close by, we cover shoots in Sandown (1 mile north-east), Alverstone (1 mile north-west), Queen's Bower (1 mile north-west), Shanklin (1 mile south) and Alverstone Garden Village (1 mile north-west). We also serve nearby towns such as Newport (7 miles north-west), Ryde (5 miles north), Cowes (10 miles north-west), Ventnor (4 miles south-west), East Cowes (9 miles north-west) and Oakfield (5 miles north). For a shoot at a remote spot, let us know early and we will plan the trip.

Other landmarks nearby include National Poo Museum (less than half a mile east) and Arthur Webster Memorial Hospital for Children (1.2 miles south-west). Within reach you will find Brading Down and Alverstone Mead.

  • Nearby schools include Sandown Bay Academy (0.6 miles north) and The Bay Church of England School (0.7 miles north-east)
  • Pubs nearby include The Old Comical pub (0.6 miles north-east)

Curry sauce

Some people won’t eat chips without curry sauce and it’s on the menu.

Gravy

Chips and gravy is a favourite in the north and the Midlands, and it goes perfectly with a pie.

How it works

On the day, we park up on the agreed spot, set up and heat the fryers. Then everything is fried to order, so we time it to your schedule. On a winter shoot near Lake, the light goes by about 4:00pm, so the unit base needs lighting for late service. In summer, light lasts until about 9:20pm.

  1. Get in touch with the basics: when, where and roughly how many.
  2. Show us where the van would go, and we’ll confirm it works.
  3. Closer to the day, we confirm the arrival time and serving time.
  4. The van rolls up, the hatch opens and the fryers get going for the crew.
  5. Once the last portion is out, we pack up and go.

FAQs for Lake

What’s the nearest station to Lake?

Lake station, in Lake itself.

What about events near the coast?

Yes, of course. Wind does not affect the fryers, but plan a sheltered spot for the queue.

Do you cover Lake?

We do. We serve events in Lake and across the Isle of Wight. Send us your date to check availability.

What happens if it rains?

We cook inside the van, so rain doesn’t stop us. It’s worth planning some cover for the queue.

Can coeliacs eat the battered fish?

Standard batter is made with wheat flour, so battered fish contains gluten. Tell us about coeliac crew when you enquire, and we’ll tell you honestly what we can offer.

What paperwork do you provide?

Productions vary, so ask your production office for the list and we’ll go through it.

How quickly can you serve everyone?

It depends on numbers, the menu and how people arrive. Tell us your numbers and how long you have for food, and we will plan service around it.

Is everything cooked fresh?

Yes. We cook inside the van, so food is cooked there and then, rather than made in advance.

DIY versus a fish and chip van

Ordering in from a local chip shop is an option. Large orders are slow, and the food cools in the bags. A van cooks in front of your crew instead.

For a small group, making your own food can work. For bigger numbers, a van makes life easier, and you get to enjoy the day.

Occasions we serve in Lake

It suits short shoots without a full catering unit.

The van suits big events and small ones. Common bookings include:

  • Commercials and music videos
  • Location shoots
  • Wrap parties
  • Period dramas on location

Among the historic houses close to Lake are Rylstone Manor (1.7 miles south) and Morton Manor (1.9 miles north-east). Period locations like these usually keep vehicles well away from the house, so agree the base early.

Questions to ask before you book

  • Exactly what’s included in the price
  • The cancellation terms
  • When payment is due
  • How much space the van takes up

How to compare vans

Diets, allergies and planning

Tell us about dietary needs and allergies early, and we will tell you honestly what we can offer. To make it work smoothly:

  • Plan bins and waste at base
  • Collect diets and allergies with crew details
  • Have a back-up for special diets
  • Send final numbers the day before

After service, we pack up and get out of the way.

Bins at base keep the location clean.

For planners, venues and organisers

Many venues set rules for catering vans: where a van can park, access times and the paperwork they want. Send us your venue’s requirements and we will confirm what we can provide.

For big groups, the service window matters, so we can plan how to keep the queue short. Sending people up in groups helps.

A fish and chip van or other catering?

Compared with sandwiches on set, a chip van gives the crew a proper hot meal. Cost depends on numbers, menu and service time, plus travel and access. Every booking gets its own quote.

Why us?

  • Fried fresh, not kept warm
  • Served hot, straight from the hatch
  • No surprises in your quote
  • The queue at the hatch gets people talking
