Fresh fish and chips in Matchams

Is a fish and chip van right for your shoot?

Many locations are miles from shops. The van solves that. If you have a budget in mind, tell us, and we will suggest a menu and timing to match. Keeping the menu short is generally the best value.

Why book with us

  • No kitchen, no crockery, no washing up
  • The classic sides: peas, curry sauce and gravy
  • The queue at the hatch gets people talking
  • Hot food handed straight over

Film set catering for your shoot in Matchams

A van can get a crew fed quickly within the lunch break, without needing a kitchen on location. We’re frequently asked to cater unit base lunches and wrap parties, with pie and chips, mushy peas and cod and chips.

For a shoot in a place like Matchams, tracks and soft ground need checking. We cook inside the van, right where your crew are, so the batter is still crisp when it is handed over.

The menu, dish by dish

Haddock and chips

Haddock has a slightly sweeter flavour and a firmer flake. It’s the traditional favourite in Scotland and much of the north.

Gravy

In the north and the Midlands, gravy is the side of choice, and it’s lovely with a pie.

What the van needs

The van has to be able to get in and park safely, and a little planning goes a long way. Here’s what we look for:

  • A lit spot for dark mornings or evenings
  • Agreement from the location manager and landowner
  • Space in front of the hatch

If in doubt, send us a picture of the spot and we will advise.

What we serve

  • Sausage and chips
  • Pie and chips
  • Mushy peas
  • Haddock and chips
  • Crew lunches
  • Cod and chips

Common questions in Matchams

Could you trade in Avon Heath Country Park?

Only with permission from the park’s owner, normally the council. Check with them first, and tell us what they say.

Do you come to venues in the New Forest National Park?

Yes. Some venues there have rules about vehicles and ground, so check with yours. We will work to whatever the site needs.

How do you handle allergies?

Tell us about allergies when you book, and we’ll give you the allergen information and what we can offer.

Which areas do you serve?

London and the South East: Kent, Surrey, East and West Sussex, Hampshire, Berkshire, Bucks, Oxfordshire and the Isle of Wight.

Does the batter contain gluten?

Standard batter is made with wheat flour, so battered fish contains gluten. Let us know about coeliac crew in advance, and we will be straight with you about what’s possible.

How long will the queue be?

It depends on numbers, the menu and how people arrive. Tell us your numbers and how long you have for food, and we will plan to keep the queue moving.

Do you have a kids’ option?

Yes, children are easy to cater for. Let us know numbers, and we will plan for them.

Can the van come to our wrap?

Yes, and crews love it. Tell us the details.

Allergies and dietary needs

We take allergies seriously. Here’s how you can help:

  • Ask for dietary needs on the crew info form
  • Put allergy details in writing
  • Send the unit base address and directions
  • Agree how the base is left

We arrive at base in good time and set up.

Pre-orders from the crew help on tight breaks.

Cannot we just order from the chip shop?

Collecting fish and chips for a crowd yourself is possible, but it’s hard work. Long waits and a drive home mean food arrives lukewarm and soggy. With a van, it’s fried on the spot.

Not sure whether to order in or book a van? Consider your numbers and how fresh you want it. We are happy to send a quote so you can compare.

The process

When we arrive, we park up on the agreed spot, set up and heat the fryers. Once we are hot, we cook to order, so we time it to your schedule. At midsummer, Matchams has light until about 9:25pm, while by late September it’s nearer 7:10pm.

  1. We start with the location, call times and crew numbers.
  2. We check the route and the unit base and send a price.
  3. We arrange the van’s spot at the unit base with locations.
  4. We cook to order through the crew’s lunch break.
  5. We pack up straight after service and leave the base tidy.

How to prepare

  • Leave room in front of the hatch for a queue
  • Confirm numbers and dietary needs before the day
  • Name one person we can call on the day
