Fresh fish and chips in Noke Common

What the van needs

The van has to be able to get in and park safely, so a few things need checking. These are the things we check:

  • A clear route to base
  • Lighting for early or late service
  • Away from the shooting area’s sound

For somewhere as remote as Noke Common, early notice helps us plan the trip.

Not sure about the spot? Send us a photo and we will tell you honestly before you book.

From the hatch

Schedules move, so a contact on the day helps and we will adjust where we can. We’re often asked to cater seaside shoots and wrap parties, with mushy peas, pie and chips and sausage and chips.

Near Noke Common, crews may be miles from anywhere to eat, so a van at base is a big help. We cook inside the van, right where your crew are, and the food reaches them hot and crisp.

Allergies and dietary needs

Good planning keeps every guest safe and happy. Here’s how:

  • Put allergy details in writing
  • Agree the waste plan with locations
  • Send the unit base address and directions
  • Let us know about coeliac disease

Lunch is planned around the call sheet, and a contact keeps us updated.

Cover near the hatch helps on wet days.

Planners, venues and businesses

Many venues set rules for catering vans: parking spots, arrival times and documents. Send us your venue’s requirements and we’ll work through them with you.

If your event is in a public place, such as a park or a street, check what permission you need first. Ask the council or landowner early.

Food your guests will love

Curry sauce

The chip shop’s own curry sauce is mild and a little sweet, great with chips and sausages.

Sausage and chips

Sausage and chips is the go-to for anyone who is not a fish fan.

DIY versus a fish and chip van

If you do order from a chip shop, ring well ahead and collect as close to eating time as you can. For anything more than a handful of people, a van is generally the easier option.

Not sure whether to order in or book a van? Think about numbers, timing and how hot you want the food. We are happy to send a quote so you can compare.

Prices and what affects them

Here’s what makes the biggest difference to the price:

  • The length of service
  • How easy the site is to reach
  • The number of meals
  • Whether a minimum applies

Fish and chip van prices depend on the booking. A short service and a long afternoon’s trading are very different bookings. We set everything out in your quote.

Details that help

These details help us quote quickly:

  • The venue or postcode
  • A picture of where the van would go
  • Where you’d like the van to go
  • Access details such as gates and narrow lanes

Still finalising the details? No problem: give us a rough idea and the date, and we will firm it up nearer the time. Start when you’re ready: fill in our quote form.

Common questions in Noke Common

What about events near the coast?

Yes, of course. The cooking is inside the van, so wind does not affect it, but the queue will want shelter.

Is Noke Common too small for a chip van?

Not at all. We serve villages and hamlets as well as towns. Tell us about lanes, gates and the ground.

Can you serve children?

Yes. Children usually love sausage and chips. Include children in your numbers.

What does it cost to hire the van?

The price depends on numbers, menu, service time and travel. Send us the details for a quote.

What if lunch moves?

We can. Give us a contact for changes, and we will adjust where possible.

Can coeliacs eat the battered fish?

No, not as standard: the batter contains wheat. Tell us about any coeliac crew and we’ll explain the options before you book.

Can you go on a lawn or field?

Normally, if it’s firm and dry. Soft, wet ground can trap any vehicle, so have a hard-surface back-up.

Do you have documents for productions?

Send us your supplier requirements.

The process

Changes on the day are fine: we can start a little later or slow the pace. On a winter shoot near Noke Common, the light goes by about 4:00pm, so the unit base needs lighting for late service. Summer shoots have daylight until about 9:20pm.

  1. Start with three things: the date, the place and a rough headcount.
  2. Show us where the van would go, and we will confirm it works.
  3. A week or so before, we confirm timings and numbers.
  4. We park, open the hatch and start frying for the crew.
  5. Last portion served, we tidy up and head off.

Before we arrive

  • Think about a gazebo by the van in case of rain
  • Have a level parking spot ready
  • Check the way in for low branches, cables and narrow gates

Getting a price

It’s easy to get a price: tell us the date, place, numbers and serving time. We will send a clear quote that says what’s included.
