A chip van near Puddle Dock

How our film set catering works in Puddle Dock

A chip van fits right in at seaside locations. We serve pie and chips, haddock and chips and cod and chips, and typical bookings are for seaside shoots and crew treats on long shoot days.

In Puddle Dock, access to base can be tight, so tell us the route and any height limits. The fryers are in the van, so the cooking happens right there at your shoot, so the batter is still crisp when it’s handed over.

The process

We arrive on time, parks where we agreed and the hatch goes up. Once the oil is hot, the first portions go out at the time you asked for. Daylight is short on winter shoots near Puddle Dock: sunset is about 3:50pm, so lunch at base is often in daylight but a wrap meal is not.

  1. Start with three things: the date, the place and a rough headcount.
  2. Show us where the van would go, and we will confirm it works.
  3. A week or so before, we confirm timings and numbers.
  4. We park, open the hatch and start frying for the crew.
  5. Last portion served, we tidy up and head off.

Getting ready for the day

  • Check the venue or landowner is happy for the van to park
  • Choose a level, firm spot for the van
  • Think about a gazebo by the van in case of rain

Your questions about a fish and chip van for the crew in Puddle Dock

What about parking in Puddle Dock?

London parking needs planning: let us know about off-street space or permits. We’ll work around it.

What’s the nearest station to Puddle Dock?

The closest is Upminster station, roughly 1.9 miles away.

Where do you take the van?

London and South East England: Kent, Surrey, East and West Sussex, Hampshire, Berkshire, Bucks, Oxfordshire and the Isle of Wight, including Puddle Dock.

What does it cost to hire the van?

Every booking is quoted individually, based on your numbers and timings. Give us your date, numbers and serving time and we will reply with a price.

Can you park on the road outside?

It depends on the road. Off-road parking is normally simpler; for the street, check the council’s rules.

Where does the van go on location?

Generally, with a level spot. We will agree the spot with your location manager.

Can the van park on grass?

Normally, if it’s firm and dry. Soft, wet ground can trap any vehicle, so have a hard-surface back-up.

Is there something for children?

Children are very welcome. Let us know numbers, and we’ll include them in the plan.

For event organisers in Puddle Dock

Venues often have their own rules about outside caterers and vehicles: parking spots, arrival times and documents. Tell us what your venue needs and we’ll work through them with you.

Parks, greens and streets typically need permission for a catering van. The council or landowner will tell you what they need.

Food your guests will love

Gravy

Chips and gravy is a favourite in the north and the Midlands, and it goes perfectly with a pie.

Mushy peas

No fish and chips is complete without mushy peas for many people.

What the van needs

We will be honest if a spot will not work, and suggest an alternative. The main points are:

  • Level, firm ground at base
  • Agreement from the location manager and landowner
  • Room for the crew to queue

Puddle Dock is in London, within the Ultra Low Emission Zone, and parking can be tight: tell us about driveways, yards, car parks or a council parking suspension.

If in doubt, send us a picture of the spot and we’ll advise before you book.
