Planning an event in Wavendon?

Can’t we just order from the chip shop?

Not sure whether to order in or book a van? Think about numbers, timing and how hot you want the food. We’re happy to send a quote so you can compare.

Collecting fish and chips for a crowd yourself is possible, but it’s hard work. By the time you’ve queued, paid and driven back, the batter has gone soft. A van fries it right there, so it’s crisp.

How our film set catering works in Wavendon

Everything is cooked as crew come up, so lunch is hot and fresh. Popular choices include haddock and chips, pie and chips and mushy peas, and we’re regularly asked to cater crew lunches at base and wrap celebrations.

Rural locations near Wavendon can be a long way from food, so lunch at base matters. You will know what’s included before booking: serving times, the menu and anything else agreed.

How it works

We do not cook ahead. Each portion is battered and fried as it’s ordered, so it’s as fresh as from any chip shop. On a winter shoot near Wavendon, the light goes by about 3:55pm, so the unit base needs lighting for late service. Summer shoots have daylight until about 9:25pm.

  1. Start with three things: the date, the place and a rough headcount.
  2. Show us where the van would go, and we will confirm it works.
  3. Closer to the day, we confirm the arrival time and serving time.
  4. We park, open the hatch and start frying for the crew.
  5. Once the last portion is out, we pack up and go.

Before we arrive

  • Get permission for the van from the venue
  • Choose a level, firm spot for the van

Planning for dietary needs

With a bit of planning, dietary needs are easier to handle. A few tips:

  • Confirm numbers the day before
  • Ask for dietary needs on the crew info form
  • Share the base location and route
  • Agree how the base is left

We take our used oil and waste with us.

A chip van wrap party is a great way to finish a shoot.

Space, access and the venue

The van has to be able to get in and park safely, so a few things need checking. These are the things we check:

  • A lit spot for dark mornings or evenings
  • Agreement from the location manager and landowner
  • Away from the shooting area’s sound

If in doubt, send us a picture of the spot and we will advise.

About the food

Sausage and chips

Sausage and chips is the go-to for anyone who isn’t a fish fan, especially with curry sauce.

Curry sauce

The chip shop’s own curry sauce is mild and a little sweet, great with chips and sausages.

Organising for someone else?

Booking for a company? Tell us what your finance team needs, and we’ll talk you through the process. We can work with your facilities team on access and timings.

For larger numbers, tell us how long you have for food, so we can plan how to keep the queue short. Staggering groups helps a lot.

A chip van compared with other options

Long shoots usually need a full catering unit. A van is great for short jobs and crew treats. Most vans have a minimum charge, because the van, fuel and travel cost the same for a small group. We will tell you up front.
