Fresh fish and chips in Crumbles

About our fish and chip van for events in Crumbles

The smell of fish and chips brings a queue to any fête. Organisers get a trader almost everyone is happy to queue for. Popular choices include haddock and chips, cod and chips and chips, and we are often booked for sports tournaments and school summer fairs.

Near Crumbles, events may be far from shops and cafés, so fish and chips goes down well. Every portion is cooked to order on the day, never cooked in advance and left in a hot cabinet, and served the moment it comes out of the fryer.

Running an event in Crumbles

Crumbles is about 2 miles east of Eastbourne, in East Sussex. Crumbles is well within our area, so your event just needs a date, a spot for the van and a serving time. We take the van to all 289 towns and villages in East Sussex, from the larger towns to small villages. You can also see our page for Brighton, about 20 miles away.

For anyone arriving by train, Pevensey & Westham station is about 1.3 miles away. For a church fête or fundraiser, at a church such as St. Richard, a chip van adds hot food to the cakes and tombola. Events in and around the South Downs National Park, within about 8 miles of Crumbles, frequently have rules about vehicles, ground and waste; we will follow the site’s requirements. With the sea within about 3 miles, we plan shelter from the wind for coastal events, and fish and chips sells well by the sea.

Events anywhere in BN23 start with a parking spot for the van. Streets in the area include Tambora Square, Long Beach View and Golden Gate Way, and the van can serve an event on any of them with a suitable parking spot. Is a fish and chip van right for your event?

Most events have a burger van. A chip van gives visitors something different. Distance and any road charges make a difference, so tell us exactly where your event is.

Planning the van’s spot

A fish and chip van is a vehicle, so the spot matters, and a little planning goes a long way. Here’s what we look for:

  • Confirmation the van can trade there
  • Space for a queue away from paths
  • A level, firm pitch the van can drive onto

If in doubt, send us a picture of the spot and we’ll advise.

From the hatch

Crumbles questions

Can you serve near the sea around Crumbles?

Yes. Wind does not affect the fryers, but plan a sheltered spot for the queue.

Could you trade in Princes Park?

Only if the landowner, normally the council, allows it. Check with them first, and tell us what they say.

Can you trade at our fête or festival?

Send us the event details, dates and pitch information and we will let you know if we’re available.

Do you have allergen information?

Tell us about allergies when you book, and we’ll give you the allergen information and what we can offer.

How long does set-up take?

We arrive well before service to park and heat the fryers. We’ll agree arrival and serving times with you so food is ready when you want it.

Does the batter contain gluten?

Not as standard: batter is usually made with wheat flour. Let us know and we’ll tell you what we can do.

What do we need to supply?

Tell us what’s available at the site in your enquiry, and we’ll confirm what we need.

How much is fish and chip van hire?

Every booking is quoted individually, based on your numbers and timings. Tell us your date and rough numbers and we’ll reply with a price.

Perfect for your event in Crumbles

Almost every visitor likes fish and chips.

These are some of the bookings we take:

  • Church fêtes
  • Music and food festivals
  • Community open days
  • Sports club events and race days

Events in parks such as Princes Park need permission from the council or landowner, and the van needs a firm route onto the pitch.

Before you book anyone

  • A clear list of what’s included
  • What the van needs: space, access, power
  • Whether travel is included
  • The deadline for final numbers

Planning for dietary needs

With a bit of planning, dietary needs are easier to handle. Here are a few tips:

  • Plan bins near food stalls
  • Give us an idea of numbers
  • Tell us about the pitch
  • Agree how we will be paid: pitch fee, share of takings or minimum

If we’re feeding volunteers, agree a time that suits the schedule.

A spot near the entrance or main ring works well.

How we price a fish and chip van for your event

Every booking is priced individually, based on a few main things:

  • Peak dates such as summer Saturdays
  • The number of meals
  • Parking and the way in
  • The menu and how many choices

The price depends on numbers, the menu and how long we serve, along with distance and access to the site. We quote for each booking individually.

Getting an accurate quote

When you contact us, it helps to tell us:

  • A picture of the space and the way in
  • Roughly how many people, including children
  • Dietary needs, with numbers
  • The venue or postcode

A detailed enquiry gets a more accurate quote: where the van would park, how to get in, numbers and timings. Photos of the spot and the way in help. To send your details, send us your details through our quote form.

How it works

It is a relaxed, well-organised set-up. Arrival and serving times are agreed beforehand, set up where we’ve agreed, and get on with frying and serving. Summer fêtes in Crumbles have long light evenings, with sunset about 9:15pm at midsummer, but by late September the light goes at about 7:00pm.

  1. Send us your date, numbers and address.
  2. We check the route in and send a price.
  3. We arrive in good time to set up.
  4. Fish goes into the batter and straight into the fryer, to order.
  5. We serve hot from the hatch and pack up when we are done.

Preparing for the day

  • Make sure the van can get in
  • Plan a bit of cover near the hatch if rain is likely
  • Give us a contact for the day

DIY versus a fish and chip van

For a small group, making your own food can work. For bigger numbers, a van makes life easier, and nobody has to miss the event.

Ordering in from a local chip shop is an option. Large orders are slow, and the food cools in the bags. A van cooks in front of your visitors instead.

  • Fried fresh to order in the van at your event
  • Cod, haddock and chips, sausages and pies
  • The van comes to you: homes, venues, workplaces and fields
  • Served at the time you choose, from the hatch
