A chip van near Manston

Takeaway run or book a van?

If you do order from a chip shop, ring well ahead and collect as close to eating time as you can. For anything more than a handful of people, a van is usually the easier option.

For a small group, making your own food can work. For bigger numbers, a van makes life easier, and nobody has to miss the event.

Manston events: pitches and permissions

Manston is about 2 miles west of Ramsgate, in Kent. From the centre of Manston to the outskirts, we offer the same service: fresh frying, hot food from the hatch and a clear price. We cover all 922 towns and villages across Kent, from the larger towns to small villages. We serve events right across the region, from Manston to Canterbury (about 13 miles away).

For anyone arriving by train, Thanet Parkway station is about 1.2 miles away. For a church fête or fundraiser, at a church such as St. Catherine's Church, a chip van adds hot food to the cakes and tombola. The coast is within about 3 miles of Manston, so for seaside events we plan a sheltered pitch.

This part of Kent takes in CT12, and we can serve your event anywhere in it. Streets in the area include High Street, The Meadows and Manston Road, and the van can serve an event on any of them with a suitable parking spot. If your venue is just outside Manston, we also cover Haine (1 mile north-east), Flete (1 mile north), Newington (1 mile east), Cliffs End (1 mile south) and Chilton (1 mile south-east). Within a short drive, we also cover Canterbury (13 miles west), Dover (15 miles south), Broadstairs (3 miles east), Whitstable (15 miles west), Deal (9 miles south) and Herne Bay (10 miles west).

A little further out are Spitfire and Hurricane Memorial Museum (0.9 miles west) and Ramsgate General Hospital (2.1 miles south-east). The countryside around Manston includes Sandwich and Pegwell Bay.

  • Local schools include The Royal Harbour Academy (1.8 miles east)
  • Nearby, you’ll find Lord of the Manor pub (0.9 miles south-east)
  • Parks and local facilities nearby include Margate West (2.6 miles north)

Diets, allergies and planning

Allergies are taken seriously. Help us by following these steps:

  • Arrange bins and waste collection
  • Agree how we will be paid: pitch fee, share of takings or minimum
  • Have other stalls for special diets
  • Tell us expected visitor numbers

Agree a wet-weather pitch on hard standing in case the ground is soft.

Pre-selling meal tickets helps us plan.

About the food

Haddock and chips

Haddock is a little sweeter than cod, with a finer, firmer flake. It’s the traditional favourite in Scotland and much of the north.

Mushy peas

No fish and chips is complete without mushy peas for many people.

What affects the price in Manston

Every booking is priced individually, based on a few main things:

  • Your choice of menu
  • How many people are eating
  • How easy the site is to reach
  • The length of service

Most vans have a minimum charge, because the van, fuel and travel cost the same for a small group. Ask us what applies to your event.

What we need to know

To speed things up, tell us:

  • How to get in: gates, lanes and ground
  • The venue or postcode
  • Your date and serving time
  • A picture of where the van would go

We only need a few details to quote: the date, where the van would park, roughly how many people and when you’d like to eat. You can fill in our quote form.

Is a fish and chip van right for your event?

For a stall visitors will queue for, a fish and chip van is a great choice. The price depends on numbers, the menu and how long we serve, plus travel and access. We quote for each booking individually.

Why book with us

  • Events in Manston and across Kent
  • No surprises in your quote
  • Fish and chips fried fresh on site
  • Served hot, straight from the hatch

Before you choose a spot

Before the day, we will agree where the van parks. It needs to tick a few simple boxes:

  • Firm, level ground for the pitch
  • Room in front of the hatch for a queue that does not block walkways
  • Confirmation the van can trade there

Not sure about the spot? Send us a picture and we will tell you honestly before booking.

How the day works

Because we cook inside the van, rain doesn’t stop us. It’s worth thinking about cover for the queue, though. For an evening event in Manston, sunset is about 8:45pm in late May and 9:15pm in late June; after dark, we need a lit pitch.

  1. Tell us what you’re planning and when you’d like to eat.
  2. We come back with availability and a clear price.
  3. We agree exactly where the van parks.
  4. Batter, fish and chips all go into the fryer as people come up.
  5. We leave the spot as we found it.

Getting ready for the day

  • Check the way in for low branches, cables and narrow gates
  • Give us a contact for the day
  • Have a level parking spot ready

Ask for a quote

A detailed enquiry gets a more accurate quote: where the van would park, how to get in, numbers and timings. A photo of the spot helps too. When you’re ready, use our quote form.
