Fish and chip van for events for your event in Speedwell

We can trade to the public or feed your volunteers, or both. We’re often asked to cater church fêtes and fish and chip suppers and summer fairs, with sausage and chips, chips and cod and chips.

A fête near Speedwell might be on a field with no mains power; tell us what’s available and we’ll plan around it. We serve from the hatch, so it’s hot and generous, and the queue keeps moving.

A fish and chip van or other catering?

Compared with a barbecue run by volunteers, a van means volunteers can enjoy the day. Travel, tolls and charges such as ULEZ can affect the price, so tell us exactly where your event is.

Why us?

  • Quick service from the hatch
  • Events in Speedwell and across Milton Keynes
  • All the chip-shop extras
  • A clear quote before you book

See our pricing or what a fish and chip van costs.

How it works

Nothing is cooked before it is needed. Fish is battered and fried when people come up to the hatch, so it is as fresh as from any chip shop. December events in Speedwell lose the light at about 3:55pm, so pitches need lighting; spring events have light until about 8:55pm by late May.

  1. It starts with your event and pitch details.
  2. You get our pitch needs and a quick answer on availability.
  3. We arrive at the agreed time and set up on the pitch.
  4. We cook fresh and serve through the day.
  5. We pack down at the end and leave the pitch clean.

Getting ready for the day

  • Check the venue or landowner is happy for the van to park
  • Clear the route for the van
  • Confirm numbers and dietary needs before the day

Mushy peas

Mushy peas are a must for plenty of fish and chip fans.

Gravy

Chips and gravy is a favourite in the north and the Midlands, and it goes perfectly with a pie.

Planning the van’s spot

Before the day, we’ll agree where the van parks. A good spot ticks these boxes:

  • What’s available on the pitch
  • Access that avoids crowds
  • A back-up spot if the ground is soft

Not sure about the spot? Send us a photo and we will tell you honestly.

Popular choices

  • Curry sauce
  • Cod and chips
  • Mushy peas
  • Sausage and chips
  • Haddock and chips

Cannot we just order from the chip shop?

You could do a chip-shop run for everyone yourself, but it rarely works for a crowd. By the time you’ve queued, paid and driven back, the batter has gone soft. With a van, it is fried on the spot.

Some hosts try a takeaway order. Large orders are slow, and the food cools in the bags. A van cooks in front of your visitors instead.

Prices and what affects them

There is nothing hidden: the quote reflects:

  • The length of service
  • How many people are eating
  • Whether a minimum applies
  • How easy the site is to reach

The cost per head usually falls as numbers rise, since the van and set-up are much the same for any size. Give us your numbers and we’ll quote.

What we need to know

For a quote, it helps to have:

  • The address or venue name
  • A photo of the parking spot
  • Rough numbers for adults and children
  • Your date and serving time

Most quotes start with a few simple details: date, address, numbers and serving time. You can use our quote form.

Questions from Speedwell

What’s the nearest station to Speedwell?

The closest is Aspley Guise station, roughly 2.9 miles away.

Is Speedwell too small for a chip van?

Not at all. We serve villages and hamlets as well as towns. Tell us about lanes, gates and the ground.

Can the van park on grass?

Generally, if it’s firm and dry. Soft, wet ground can trap any vehicle, so plan a back-up spot.

Is there a non-fish option?

Yes: sausages and pies, with chips. Tell us roughly how many to expect.

Do you need power or water?

Somewhere suitable to park, with permission. Tell us whether there is power or water nearby and we’ll take it from there.

Is the food cooked at the event?

Yes. The fryers are in the van, so food is cooked there and then, not cooked earlier and kept warm.

When should we book?

As soon as you have a date. Popular dates book up first, so it pays to ask early.

Where do you take the van?

London and South East England: Kent, Surrey, Sussex, Hampshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire and the Isle of Wight.

Looking after everyone

With a little notice, diets are easier to plan for. Our advice:

  • Display allergens for each stall
  • Agree who removes waste
  • Plan crew and volunteer food times
  • Agree the terms in writing

Agree a wet-weather pitch on hard standing in case the ground is soft.

Pre-selling meal tickets helps us plan.
