How our fish and chip van for events works in Speen

We can trade to the public or feed your volunteers. On the menu are curry sauce, sausage and chips and mushy peas, and we are regularly asked to cater food for volunteers and community open days.

At a fête or show near Speen, we can bring hot food to a field. Tell us about the ground and the way in. We serve from the hatch, so it’s hot and generous, and service is quick once we’re up and running.

Cannot we just order from the chip shop?

Deep-frying for lots of people at home is risky: big pans of hot oil, children and garden parties don’t mix. A van is designed for exactly this.

Collecting fish and chips for a crowd yourself is possible, but it’s hard work. Long waits and a drive home mean food arrives lukewarm and soggy. A van fries it right there, so it’s crisp.

Perfect for your event in Speen

It’s a hot meal for helpers as well.

The menu, dish by dish

Gravy

Chips and gravy is a favourite in the north and the Midlands, and it is lovely with a pie.

Curry sauce

Some people will not eat chips without curry sauce, so we bring it along.

Diets, allergies and planning

Good planning keeps every guest safe and happy. Try these:

  • Plan something for visitors we cannot cater for
  • Set a time for helpers’ food
  • Send us the pitch size and ground conditions
  • Arrange bins and waste collection

We arrive before the gates open to set up on the pitch.

Pre-sold meal tickets can help at fundraisers.

Speen events: pitches and permissions

Speen is about 1 mile north-west of Newbury, in West Berkshire. People in Speen book us for all sorts of reasons, but the plan is always the same: somewhere to park, a time to serve and fresh frying. Speen is one of 155 towns and villages in West Berkshire where we bring the van. Our nearest city page is Reading, about 16 miles away.

PTAs at schools such as Robert Sandilands Primary School and Nursery frequently want one reliable hot-food stall. Events in parks such as Victoria Park need permission from the council or landowner, and the van needs a firm route onto the pitch.

Events anywhere in RG14 and RG20 start with a parking spot for the van. Whether your event is on Bath Road, Pound Lane and Speen Lane or anywhere nearby, we will bring the van to you. If your venue is just outside Speen, we also cover Bagnor (1 mile north), Speenhamland (1 mile east), Donnington (1 mile north-east), Stockcross (1 mile north-west) and Shaw (1 mile east). We also serve nearby towns such as Thatcham (4 miles east), Burghfield Common (12 miles east), Hungerford (7 miles west), Calcot (13 miles east), Lambourn (11 miles north-west) and Burghfield Hill (13 miles east).

A little further out are British Balloon Museum & Library Ltd (1.1 miles east) and Donnington Castle (1.1 miles north). The countryside around Speen includes Rack Marsh.

  • Schools near Speen include St Bartholomew's School (1.1 miles south-east) and St Bartholomew's School (1.1 miles south-east)
  • Nearby, you will find The Starting Gate pub (0.5 miles north-east)

What a fish and chip van costs

The price comes down to a few factors:

  • Service time
  • Parking and the way in
  • How far we travel
  • How many people are eating

Larger groups typically cost less per head, because the van, travel and set-up cost much the same either way. Tell us your numbers for an accurate price.

Getting an accurate quote

Good planning starts with a few facts. Please include:

  • A photo of the parking spot
  • Allergies and diets you know about
  • Anything awkward about the way in
  • The address or venue name

Every quote is worked out for your event. Start with your date, and we’ll confirm whether we’re available that day.

Organising for someone else?

If your event is in a public place, such as a park or a street, check what permission you need first. Ask the council or landowner early.

For repeat bookings, such as regular staff lunches or annual fairs, let us know your dates early, so we can plan ahead.

Before you choose a spot

A good parking spot makes the whole thing easier. We need:

  • Details of any power or water on site
  • Access that avoids crowds
  • The landowner’s or organiser’s permission for the van

If in doubt, send us a picture of the spot and we’ll advise before you book.

What we serve

  • Mushy peas
  • Cod and chips
  • Sausage and chips
  • Curry sauce
  • Chips
  • Haddock and chips

Your questions about a fish and chip van for your event in Speen

Can the van park in Victoria Park?

Only if the landowner, usually the council, allows it. Ask them first, and tell us what they say.

Which station is closest to Speen?

Newbury station, about 1.2 miles south-east of the centre.

What happens if it rains?

Rain doesn’t stop the fryers: the cooking is inside the van. It is worth planning some cover for the queue.

How big a pitch do you need?

A firm pitch with space for a queue. Mention any power or water.

What do we need to supply?

A suitable spot for the van and permission to park there. Tell us whether there is power or water nearby and we’ll take it from there.

Can you park on the road outside?

It depends on the road. A drive, car park or yard is normally easier; for the street, check the council’s rules.

What are the terms for events?

That varies: a pitch fee, a share of takings or a guaranteed minimum. We’ll agree terms before the day.

Is there a non-fish option?

Sausage and chips and pie and chips are on the menu. Tell us about other diets and we will be honest about what’s possible.

How the day works

The smell of the fryers does the inviting. Fish goes into the batter and straight into the fryer, and chips are fried in batches through service. December events in Speen lose the light at about 4:00pm, so we need a lit pitch; spring events have light until about 8:55pm by late May.

  1. First, tell us about your event.
  2. We check the date and where the van will park, then send a quote.
  3. We agree timings, access and the parking spot.
  4. On the day, we park up and fry fresh for your visitors.
  5. We serve from the hatch, then leave the pitch tidy.

Getting ready for the day
