Fish and chip van for events in Tonbridge, fried fresh

The van is self-sufficient on the pitch, so we need little help from busy volunteers. We’re often asked to cater agricultural and country shows and school fairs and sports days, serving haddock and chips, chips and cod and chips.

A town like Tonbridge has schools, churches, clubs and parks that run events through the year. Fish and chips suits any of them. We serve from the hatch, so it’s hot and generous, and the queue keeps moving.

Tonbridge: your questions answered

How far is Tonbridge from London?

About 26 miles from central London, and well within our area.

Could you trade in Haysden Country Park?

Only with permission from the park’s owner, normally the council. Ask them first.

What food do you serve?

Proper fish and chips, plus sausage or pie and chips. The sides are mushy peas, curry sauce and gravy.

Can you go on a lawn or field?

It depends on the ground. Let us know what the ground is like, and send a picture if you can.

Who clears up?

The pitch is left as we found it. It helps to have bins near the hatch.

What are the terms for events?

It depends on the event: a pitch fee, a share of takings or a guaranteed minimum. We will agree terms before the day.

How long will the queue be?

It depends on numbers, the menu and how people arrive. Give us your numbers and service window, and we will plan to keep the queue moving.

What about visitors who do not eat fish?

There is: sausages and pies, with chips. Tell us roughly how many to expect.

How it works

We arrive in good time before you want to eat, park the van and get the fryers going. Your visitors can wander over to the hatch once service starts. Evening events in Tonbridge have light until about 9:20pm at midsummer; after dark, we need a lit pitch.

  1. Tell us what you’re planning and when you’d like to eat.
  2. You hear back on the date and the price.
  3. The van’s spot is fixed in advance, and how it gets in.
  4. Batter, fish and chips all go into the fryer as people come up.
  5. We leave the spot as we found it.

Before we arrive

  • Get permission for the van from the venue
  • Choose a level, firm spot for the van
  • Let us know who to talk to on the day

Planning help

A chip van compared with other options

For a stall visitors will queue for, a fish and chip van is a great choice. Cost depends on numbers, menu and service time, plus travel and access. Every booking gets its own quote.

Looking after everyone

Most events have a few visitors with dietary needs. To plan for them:

  • Tell us expected visitor numbers
  • Ask traders for allergen information to display
  • Agree how we’ll be paid: pitch fee, share of takings or minimum
  • Arrange bins and waste collection

Agree a wet-weather pitch on hard standing in case the ground is soft.

Let visitors know there’s a chip van.

What comes out of the fryer

Cod and chips

Cod has big, soft white flakes and a mild flavour, and it’s the favourite in much of the south. It’s battered and fried to order, so it’s crisp when it reaches you.

Gravy

A pot of gravy turns chips into comfort food, especially in winter.
