A chip van suits school fairs and sports days, with the school’s permission for the van on site. We serve mushy peas, haddock and chips and cod and chips, and we’re regularly asked to cater fundraisers and summer fairs.

Running an event in West Malling

West Malling is about 6 miles west of Maidstone, in Kent. Around West Malling, we park wherever there is level, firm ground. We cover all 922 towns and villages across Kent. We serve events right across the region, from West Malling to London (about 26 miles away).

A summer fête at Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin is the classic setting for a fish and chip van. An event in Manor Park Country Park means agreeing traders and vehicle routes with the landowner, generally the council.

How it works

We take care of the food from arrival to the last chip, so you can enjoy your event. In West Malling, a midsummer event stays light until about 9:20pm, while a late-September show is dark by about 7:00pm.

  1. We start with a few details about your event.
  2. We check the date and where the van will park, then send a quote.
  3. We agree timings, access and the parking spot.
  4. We cook to order on the day for your visitors.
  5. We serve from the hatch, then leave the pitch tidy.

Before we arrive

  • Give us a contact for the day
  • Confirm numbers and dietary needs before the day

Planning the van’s spot

A fish and chip van is a vehicle, so the spot matters, and a little planning goes a long way. These are the things we check:

  • Access that avoids crowds
  • A level, firm pitch the van can drive onto
  • Space for a queue away from paths

Not sure about the spot? Send us a photo and we’ll tell you honestly.

What we serve

  • Sausage and chips
  • Curry sauce
  • Cod and chips
  • Haddock and chips
  • Chips
  • Mushy peas

Diets, allergies and planning

We need to know about dietary needs and allergies in advance, and we’ll be straight with you about what’s possible. To make it work smoothly:

  • Make sure allergen information is available
  • Let us know about allergy rules on site
  • Agree how we’ll be paid: pitch fee, share of takings or minimum
  • Offer a choice of traders where you can

We set up before visitors arrive, at the agreed time.

A clear route for the van before the gates open avoids problems.

Questions from West Malling

Can the van park in Manor Park Country Park?

Only with permission from the park’s owner, typically the council. Check with them first.

How far is West Malling from London?

About 26 miles from central London.

Can you feed our volunteers and crew?

Yes. Give us numbers and a time.

When do you arrive?

It depends on numbers and the service time. We confirm all the timings beforehand.

Do you do festivals?

Tell us the date and pitch details and we will check.

How do you charge at fêtes?

Tell us how your event generally works with traders, and we will agree terms.

How soon do we need to book?

The sooner the better. Popular dates book up first, so it pays to ask early.

What can visitors choose from?

Fish and chips, of course, with sausages and pies for anyone who does not want fish. The sides are mushy peas, curry sauce and gravy.

How we price a fish and chip van for your event

We’ll give you a clear quote. What affects it most:

  • Access and parking
  • Your choice of menu
  • The minimum booking
  • The date and time of year

The date matters too: summer Saturdays and December Fridays are the busiest days of the year. It’s worth asking early.

Details that help

The more we know about your event, the better we can plan. Please include:

  • A photo of the parking spot
  • Roughly how many people, including children
  • Where you’d like the van to go
  • How to get in: gates, lanes and ground

Not sure of numbers yet? No problem: tell us the basics about your event, and we’ll quote on that. Start when you are ready: fill in our quote form.

Organising for someone else?

Planning an event for a club, school or charity in West Malling? Fish and chips is a reliable crowd-pleaser. Tell us about the event and we will take it from there.

If your event is in a public place, such as a park or a street, check what permission you need first. Ask the council or landowner early.

A fish and chip van or other catering?

At larger events, a van adds to the mix and spreads the queues. There is no one-size-fits-all price for a fish and chip van. A one-hour staff lunch is a different job from serving all afternoon at a fête. Your quote spells it all out.

Why book with us

  • A clear quote before booking
  • No kitchen, no crockery, no washing up
  • The queue at the hatch gets people talking
  • Mushy peas, curry sauce and gravy on the side

See our prices page and our guide to van hire costs.

Takeaway run or book a van?

Collecting fish and chips for a crowd yourself is possible, but it is hard work. Long waits and a drive home mean food arrives lukewarm and soggy. A van fries it right there, so it’s crisp.

If you do order from a chip shop, ring well ahead and collect as close to eating time as you can. For anything more than a handful of people, a van is typically the easier option.

About the food

Mushy peas

Mushy peas are made from dried marrowfat peas, soaked and cooked until soft. They’re the side most people expect.

Sausage and chips

For anyone who does not fancy fish, there is sausage and chips, and children love it.

  • Fried fresh to order in the van at your event
  • Cod, haddock and chips, sausages and pies
  • The van comes to you: homes, venues, workplaces and fields
  • Served at the time you choose, from the hatch
