Allergies and dietary needs
With a little notice, diets are easier to plan for. We suggest:
- Flag any coeliac guests, not just gluten-free preferences
- Put allergy details in writing
- Add an allergy question to your invitations
- Give us separate numbers for children
Keep the menu short and the queue moves quickly, especially when everyone wants to eat at once.
Plan cover near the hatch if rain is possible.
About our fish and chip van hire in Bailey's Hard
We keep the menu to the classics: fish and chips, sausages and pies, plus the sides everyone expects. Fewer choices means fresher food and shorter waits. Popular choices include cod and chips, sausage and chips and curry sauce, and typical bookings are for wakes and gatherings after a funeral and work Christmas parties.
In a rural place like Bailey's Hard, fish and chips in a field feels just right. Tell us about gates, tracks and the ground. Let us know about allergies and dietary needs in advance, and we will be straight with you about what we can do before booking.
Is a fish and chip van right for your event?
A cold buffet is simple, but food sits out, and nothing’s hot on a cool evening. A chip van cooks to order and serves hot. Got a budget? Let us know, and we will suggest how to make it work. A short menu is often the best value.

Sausage and chips
Sausage and chips covers anyone who doesn’t want fish, and children love it.
Cod and chips
Cod is the classic: mild, white and flaky, and it is what most people in the south ask for. We batter it and fry it to order, so it is crisp when it reaches you.

How it works
When we arrive, we position the van, set up the hatch and get the fryers up to temperature. Once we are hot, we cook to order, timed around your event. Around midsummer it stays light in Bailey's Hard until about 9:25pm; by late September sunset is nearer 7:10pm, so summer evening service is normally in daylight. For winter events, when it is dark by about 4:00pm, the van and the queue need lighting.

Bailey's Hard: your questions answered
Is Bailey's Hard too small for a chip van?
No, we come to small places too. Tell us about lanes, gates and the ground.
We’re gathering after a service at Church of the Blessed Virgin and Child: can you come?
Yes, at a home, hall or venue nearby where the van can park. Churches rarely have space for a catering van, so the food is generally elsewhere. Send us the address.
Can you go on a lawn or field?
Often, if the ground is firm and dry. After heavy rain, soft grass can be a problem for any vehicle, so have a hard-surface back-up.
What happens when we hire the van?
We arrive with the van, cook fresh on site, and serve when you are ready to eat.
Do you need power or water?
A suitable spot for the van and permission to park there. Mention any power or water available and we will confirm the rest.
Do you have allergen information?
We provide allergen information for everything we serve. Fish and gluten are the main ones in battered fish. Tell us about allergies in advance.
Do you fry it on site?
Yes, always. We fry to order in the van at your venue, and serve straight from the hatch.
What areas do you cover?
We cover London and the South East, including Hampshire. See all areas.

Should I sort the food myself?
Frying for a crowd at home isn’t a good idea: hot oil and a busy party are a bad combination. A van is designed for exactly this.
Ordering in from a local chip shop is an option. The problem is timing: big orders take a long time, and the food is cooling while it travels. A van solves that by cooking on site.
Working with your venue
Many venues set rules for catering vans: parking spots, arrival times and documents. Tell us what your venue needs and we’ll confirm what we can provide.
For larger numbers, tell us how long you have for food, so we can plan service to match. Sending people up in groups helps.
- Fried fresh to order in the van at your event
- Cod, haddock and chips, sausages and pies
- The van comes to you: homes, venues, workplaces and fields
- Served at the time you choose, from the hatch
