Haddock and chips

Haddock is a little sweeter than cod, with a finer, firmer flake. It is the traditional favourite in Scotland and much of the north.

Sausage and chips

Sausage and chips is the go-to for anyone who is not a fish fan.

How our fish and chip van hire works in Cross Gate

A fish and chip van works almost anywhere the van can park: a driveway, a car park, a yard or a firm field. We’re frequently asked to cater Fêtes, fairs and school events and big birthdays, with haddock and chips, pie and chips and sausage and chips.

In a small place like Cross Gate, the van often parks on a farm track, a field or a drive. Country lanes and long drives are fine if we know about them, and firm, dry ground is the key. We keep the menu short: fewer choices means fresher food and shorter queues.

What the van needs

A fish and chip van is a vehicle, so the spot matters, and a little planning goes a long way. Here’s what we look for:

  • A route in without tight gates or low branches
  • A spot near your guests
  • Permission from the venue or landowner for the van

Not sure about the spot? Send us a photo and we’ll tell you honestly before booking.

How it works

On the day, we park up on the agreed spot, set up and heat the fryers. Once we are hot, we cook to order, so we time it to your schedule. Evenings in Cross Gate stay light until about 9:20pm in June, but by late September sunset is around 7:05pm; after dark, the queue and the path to the van need good lighting.

  1. Get in touch with the basics: when, where and roughly how many.
  2. A photo of the parking spot helps us check the van will fit.
  3. A week or so before, we confirm timings and numbers.
  4. We park, open the hatch and start frying for your guests.
  5. Once the last portion is out, we pack up and go.

Planning help

Why fried-to-order beats a buffet

Next to a hog roast, a fish and chip van gives people a choice of fish, sausage or pie, which suits guests who don’t eat pork. Larger groups typically cost less per head, because the van, travel and set-up cost much the same either way. Give us your numbers and we will quote.

Why Cross Gate hosts choose us

  • A menu almost everyone likes
  • No kitchen, no crockery, no washing up
  • The classic sides: peas, curry sauce and gravy
  • Served hot, straight from the hatch

How to compare vans

What affects the price in Cross Gate

There are no hidden charges: the quote reflects:

  • Whether a minimum applies
  • How easy the site is to reach
  • The length of service
  • Your choice of menu

If you have a budget in mind, tell us, and we will suggest a menu and timing to match. A short menu is often the best value.

What to tell us

When you contact us, it helps to tell us:

  • Where you’d like the van to go
  • The address or venue name
  • Expected numbers
  • A photo of the space and the way in

To get a price, use our quote form. Tell us about your event in Cross Gate, and we will come back with availability and a quote.

Allergies and dietary needs

A little planning helps everyone eat safely. Here are a few tips:

  • Have bins and napkins near the hatch
  • Tell us how many children are coming
  • Tell us about vegetarian and vegan guests early
  • Collect allergies with your RSVPs

After service, we pack up, leaving the pitch tidy.

A chalkboard by the hatch with the menu keeps the queue moving.

Should I sort the food myself?

DIY food keeps costs down, but the host spends the event serving. With a fish and chip van, you get hot food without the work.

Not sure whether to order in or book a van? Think about numbers, timing and how hot you want the food. We’re happy to send a quote so you can compare.

Your questions about a fish and chip van in Cross Gate

How far is Cross Gate from London?

About 44 miles from central London, and well within our area.

What’s the nearest station to Cross Gate?

The closest is Amberley station, roughly 1.5 miles away.

Is a chip van good for a large crowd?

It depends on numbers and timings. A short menu and staggered groups keep things moving.

How long does set-up take?

We get there in good time to set up. We will agree arrival and serving times with you so food is ready when you want it.

Is grass a problem?

Frequently, if the ground is firm and dry. Soft, wet ground can trap any vehicle, so have a hard-surface back-up.

Is everything cooked fresh?

Yes. The fryers are in the van, so it’s fried on the spot, not cooked earlier and kept warm.

Who clears up?

We clear the van’s area after service. Tell us where bins can go for people’s paper and trays.

How do you handle allergies?

Tell us about allergies when you book, and we will give you the allergen information and what we can offer.
