How our fish and chip van hire works in Densole

The queue at the hatch is part of the fun. People gather, catch up and get their food straight from the fryer. Popular choices include mushy peas, gravy and sausage and chips, and we are regularly asked to cater summer garden parties and milestone birthday parties.

Somewhere like Densole, a yard or firm field frequently works. Gates, verges and soft ground are worth mentioning when you enquire. We keep the menu short: fewer choices means fresher food and shorter queues.

Choosing a fish and chip van

Planning a chip van in Densole

Densole is about 3 miles north of Folkestone, in Kent. Whether your event is in the middle of Densole or on the outskirts, the service works the same way: fresh frying, hot food from the hatch and a clear price. We cover all 922 towns and villages across Kent, from the larger towns to small villages. Our bookings stretch from Densole to Canterbury (11 miles away).

If you’re organising a summer fair for a school like Hawkinge Primary School, a chip van is a crowd-pleaser. For a christening or celebration after a service at a church such as St Luke's, the van can serve at a hall or home nearby. Densole is within about 3 miles of the Kent Downs National Landscape, and some venues there have rules about vehicles on site. Ask your venue about vehicle access. Densole is within about 4 miles of the sea, so fish and chips feels right at home here. On windy days, we plan a sheltered side for the queue.

For events in CT18, we just need to know where the van can park and a serving time. Your event could be at a house on St John's Close, St John's Way and Canterbury Road, as long as there’s somewhere for the van. We also bring the van to events in Hawkinge (1 mile south), Swingfield Minnis (1 mile north), Old Hawkinge (2 miles south-east), Arpinge (2 miles south-west) and Selsted (2 miles north). Further out, we also take the van to Ashford (13 miles west), Canterbury (11 miles north), Dover (6 miles east), Folkestone (3 miles south), Deal (12 miles north-east) and Hythe (5 miles south-west).

Other landmarks nearby include Elham Valley Countryside Centre And Railway Museum (2.7 miles south-west) and Folkestone Castle (2.1 miles south). Green spaces nearby include Cheriton Hill.

The menu, dish by dish

Haddock and chips

Haddock has loyal fans: sweeter and a touch firmer than cod. Ask us about offering haddock alongside or instead of cod.

Curry sauce

Chip-shop curry sauce is a mild, slightly sweet British classic, perfect with chips or a sausage.

Questions from Densole

How far is Densole from London?

Roughly 60 miles from the centre of London.

We are gathering after a service at St Luke's: can you come?

Yes, at a nearby hall, home or venue with somewhere for the van. Churches rarely have space for a catering van, so the food is generally elsewhere. Send us the address.

Can we choose cod or haddock?

Tell us your preference when you book and we’ll confirm the menu.

Can you cook in the rain?

We cook inside the van, so rain doesn’t stop us. It is worth planning some cover for the queue.

Can the van park on grass?

It depends on the ground. Let us know what the ground is like, and send a photo if you can.

Can coeliacs eat the battered fish?

Not as standard: batter is generally made with wheat flour. Tell us about any coeliac guests and we’ll explain the options.

What areas do you cover?

London and South East England: Kent, Surrey, Sussex, Hampshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire and the Isle of Wight.

Is it a full meal?

Yes. A portion of fish, chips and peas is a proper meal, and you can add your own cake or desserts.

Prices and what affects them

Your quote will be clear. What affects it most:

  • How many people are eating
  • The date and time of year
  • Service time
  • The menu and how many choices

Many fish and chip vans set a minimum, since getting the van there costs the same however many eat. We will tell you up front.

What to tell us

You don’t need every detail fixed to get a quote, but it helps to know:

  • Where the event is
  • Allergies and diets you know about
  • How to get in: gates, lanes and ground
  • Rough numbers for adults and children

A detailed enquiry gets a more accurate quote: the parking spot, access, numbers and serving time. Photos of the spot and the way in help. When you’re ready, use our quote form.

What the van needs

We’ll be honest if a spot will not work, and help find another. What matters most:

  • Access wide and high enough for the van
  • Confirmation that the van can park there
  • A short walk from the party

If in doubt, send us a picture of the spot and we’ll advise before booking.

Diets, allergies and planning

With a little notice, diets are easier to plan for. Our advice:

  • Count children separately
  • Tell us about coeliac guests specifically
  • Let us know numbers for vegetarians and vegans
  • Collect allergies with your RSVPs

Once everyone is fed, we pack up, leaving the pitch tidy.

Step by step

Service is quick: everything is handed over hot from the hatch. Afterwards we pack up. In Densole, the sun sets at about 9:15pm in late June and about 7:00pm in late September, so summer evening events are normally served in daylight. In December it is dark by about 3:50pm, so winter events need lighting by the van.

  1. It starts with your date, venue, numbers and serving time.
  2. You get a check on the date and the spot, and a quote.
  3. On the day we arrive in good time, park up and heat the fryers.
  4. We cook to order and serve hot at the time you chose.
  5. We pack up afterwards and leave the spot as we found it.

Getting ready for the day

  • Tell us when you want to eat
  • Confirm numbers and dietary needs before the day
  • Check the venue or landowner is happy for the van to park

Getting a price

Not sure of numbers yet? No problem: give us a rough idea and the date, and we’ll quote on that. Start when you’re ready: send us your details through our quote form.

Planning help

Takeaway run or book a van?

Doing the food yourself saves money, but the host ends up running around. Booking the van means hot food and no stress.

If you do order from a chip shop, ring well ahead and collect as close to eating time as you can. For a crowd, a van is usually simpler.

  • Fried fresh to order in the van at your event
  • Cod, haddock and chips, sausages and pies
  • The van comes to you: homes, venues, workplaces and fields
  • Served at the time you choose, from the hatch
