What a fish and chip van costs
Each booking is quoted on its own, and the price depends on a few things:
- Whether a minimum applies
- Peak dates such as summer Saturdays
- The length of service
- How easy the site is to reach
If you have a budget in mind, tell us, and we will suggest a menu and timing to match. Keeping the menu short is typically the best value.
What to tell us
The more we know about your event, the better we can plan. Please include:
- Access details such as gates and narrow lanes
- Roughly how many people, including children
- Dietary needs, with numbers
- The spot you have in mind for the van
To get a price, send us your details through our quote form. Give us the details of your event, and we’ll check the date and send a price.
How the day works
From set-up to the last portion, we look after the food, so you can get on with your event. By late September, sunset in Forest Side is around 7:10pm, and in December it is nearer 4:00pm. For anything after that, plan lights for the queue.
- Start with three things: the date, the place and a rough headcount.
- Show us where the van would go, and we will confirm it works.
- A week or so before, we confirm timings and numbers.
- The van rolls up, the hatch opens and the fryers get going for your guests.
- Once the last portion is out, we pack up and go.

Questions from Forest Side
Could you trade in Seaclose Park?
Only with permission from the park’s owner, normally the council. Check with them first.
We are gathering after a service at St. Mary's Church: can you come?
Yes, at a home, hall or venue nearby where the van can park. Food is typically served at the reception venue rather than the church. Tell us where you’ll gather.
What does it cost to hire the van?
The price depends on numbers, menu, service time and travel. Tell us about your event and we will send a quote.
When should we book?
Early, particularly for summer Saturdays and Christmas party Fridays. Ask about your date even if it’s soon.
How long are you on site?
That depends on your numbers and timings. We agree arrival, serving and finishing times with you before the day.
Do you cover Forest Side?
We do. Forest Side is one of the places we cover. Tell us your date and we will check availability.
Do we need to provide equipment?
We bring the van and everything we need to cook. You just need a suitable spot and permission.
Do you have a kids’ option?
Yes. Sausage and chips is a favourite with children. Include children in your numbers.
Looking after everyone
We need to know about dietary needs and allergies in advance, and we will tell you honestly what we can offer. To make it work smoothly:
- Ask about allergies on your invitation or sign-up form
- Flag any coeliac guests, not just gluten-free preferences
- Give us separate numbers for children
- Keep the menu short to keep the queue moving
It helps to have bins and napkins by the van for everyone.
A chalkboard by the hatch with the menu keeps the queue moving.
Planning a chip van in Forest Side
Forest Side is about 1 mile north-west of Newport, in the Isle of Wight. For events in Forest Side, we plan around your venue and timings: a quote, a parking spot and fresh frying on the day. Forest Side is one of 125 places in the Isle of Wight we cover. We serve events right across the region, from Forest Side to Southampton (15 miles away).
A green space like Seaclose Park is tempting, but a catering van there needs the landowner’s say-so, normally the council’s. School fairs and fundraisers, for a school such as Carisbrooke College, can book the van as a food stall. Forest Side is within about 4 miles of the sea, so fish and chips feels right at home here. Sea breezes can be strong, so we think about where the queue will stand.
For events in PO30, we just need to know where the van can park and a serving time. Whether your event is on Forest Road and Gunville Road or a nearby road, we can park up and fry there. We also bring the van to events in Hunny Hill (1 mile east), Parkhurst (1 mile north-east), Noke Common (1 mile north-east), Porchfield (2 miles north-west) and Locksgreen (2 miles west). Further out, we also take the van to Ryde (7 miles east), Cowes (4 miles north), Sandown (8 miles south-east), Shanklin (8 miles south-east), Ventnor (9 miles south-east) and East Cowes (4 miles north-east). If your event is somewhere remote, tell us early so we can plan the journey.
Other landmarks nearby include Carisbrooke Castle (1.3 miles south) and St Mary's Hospital (1 mile east). Green spaces nearby include Mill Hill and Briddlesford Nature Reserve.

What comes out of the fryer
Haddock and chips
Haddock has a slightly sweeter flavour and a firmer flake. In the north and in Scotland, haddock is the classic.
Curry sauce
The chip shop’s own curry sauce is mild and a little sweet, perfect with chips or a sausage.
DIY versus a fish and chip van
Ordering in from a local chip shop is an option. Large orders are slow, and the food cools in the bags. A van cooks in front of your guests instead.
DIY food keeps costs down, but the host spends the event serving. With a fish and chip van, you get hot food without the work.
