Fish and chip van hire in Gipsy Hill

Fish and chip van hire in Gipsy Hill, cooked to order

The queue at the hatch is part of the fun. People chat, the smell drifts across, and the food arrives hot. On the menu are haddock and chips, curry sauce and mushy peas, and we’re frequently booked for Fêtes, fairs and school events and festive get-togethers.

Around Gipsy Hill, most London bookings are at homes with a drive, workplaces with a car park, schools and halls. Parking is the main thing to plan, so let us know about off-street space or permits. Food is served straight from the hatch, so every portion is hot, and the queue keeps moving.

Can’t we just order from the chip shop?

Frying for a crowd at home is not a good idea: hot oil and a busy party are a bad combination. A van is designed for exactly this.

If you do order from a chip shop, ring well ahead and collect as close to eating time as you can. For a crowd, a van is normally simpler.

How it works

We work to your timings. If things run late, we hold off cooking until you are ready, so the food is still fresh when it is served. Around midsummer it stays light in Gipsy Hill until about 9:20pm; by late September sunset is nearer 7:05pm, so summer evening service is normally in daylight. In December it’s dark by about 3:55pm, so winter events need lighting by the van.

  1. First, tell us about your event.
  2. We check the date and where the van will park, then send a quote.
  3. We agree timings, access and the parking spot.
  4. We cook to order on the day for your guests.
  5. Everything goes out hot from the hatch, and we pack up afterwards.

How to prepare

  • Plan where the queue will stand
  • Have a level parking spot ready
  • Confirm the van is allowed on site

Bringing the van to Gipsy Hill

Gipsy Hill is about 3 miles south-east of Stockwell, in Greater London. Bookings in Gipsy Hill come in all shapes and sizes, but the plan is always the same: a level spot for the van, a time to eat and food fried to order. We take the van to all 764 towns and villages across Greater London, from the larger towns to small villages.

School fairs and fundraisers, for a school such as Paxton Primary School, can book the van as a food stall. Thinking of using Long Meadow? Parks typically need the owner’s permission, often the council’s, before a catering van can park or trade.

This part of Greater London takes in SE19, SE27 and SE21, and we can serve your event anywhere in it. Local streets include Dover Road, Gipsy Road and Berry Lane; an event on any of them works well with a drive or nearby car park. Nearby, we also serve events in Upper Norwood (1 mile south-west), Norwood New Town (1 mile south-west), West Norwood (1 mile north-west), Crystal Palace (1 mile east) and West Dulwich (1 mile north). Within a short drive, we also cover London (5 miles north), City of Westminster (7 miles north-west), Marylebone (7 miles north), Kensington (7 miles north-west), St Pancras (7 miles north) and Shoreditch (7 miles north).

A little further out are Crystal Palace Museum (under half a mile south-east) and St Leonard's (2 miles west). Green spaces nearby include Knight's Hill and Dulwich Upper Wood.

  • Nearby schools include Hillcrest (less than half a mile south-west) and Virgo Fidelis Convent Senior School (under half a mile west)
  • Nearby, you will find Gipsy Hill Tavern (less than half a mile north-east)

Diets, allergies and planning

We take allergies seriously. Help us by following these steps:

  • Arrange an alternative for anyone we cannot cater for
  • Add an allergy question to your invitations
  • Count children separately
  • Plan bins near the queue

Once everyone is fed, we pack up, quietly and quickly.

Somewhere to sit or lean makes fish and chips easier to eat.

What comes out of the fryer

Cod and chips

For many people, cod and chips is the definitive version. Cooked fresh at the hatch, it is hot, crisp and generous.

Sausage and chips

A sausage and chips is the chip-shop classic for younger guests and fish-dodgers, especially with curry sauce.

Your questions about a fish and chip van in Gipsy Hill

Can the van park in Long Meadow?

Only with permission from the park’s owner, usually the council. Check with them first.

What’s the nearest station to Gipsy Hill?

Gipsy Hill station, in Gipsy Hill itself.

How far ahead should we book?

Early, particularly for summer Saturdays and Christmas party Fridays. Even at short notice, it is worth asking.

How quickly can you serve everyone?

It depends on numbers, the menu and how people arrive. Tell us your numbers and how long you have for food, and we’ll plan service around it.

What areas do you cover?

We cover London and the South East, including Greater London. See all areas.

How do you handle allergies?

Tell us about allergies when you book, and we will give you the allergen information.

Do you clear up afterwards?

We pack up and leave the pitch tidy when service is finished. Tell us where bins can go for people’s paper and trays.

What happens if it rains?

Rain does not stop the fryers: the cooking is inside the van. Guests will appreciate cover near the hatch.

How we price a fish and chip van

The same numbers can mean different prices, depending on:

  • The day of the week
  • Travel, tolls and road charges
  • The number of meals
  • The minimum booking

Most vans have a minimum charge, since getting the van there costs the same however many eat. We’ll tell you up front.

What we need to know

To speed things up, tell us:

  • Expected numbers
  • Where the van would park
  • The date and time of the event
  • Any dietary needs and allergies

Tell us your date, venue or postcode and roughly how many people, along with your serving time, and you’ll get a clear price. Just fill in our quote form.

Planning the van’s spot

If a spot is not suitable, we’ll tell you. What matters most:

  • Space for people to queue at the hatch
  • Access wide and high enough for the van
  • Lighting nearby for evening events

Gipsy Hill is in London, within the Ultra Low Emission Zone, and parking can be tight: let us know about off-street space or permits.

If in doubt, send us a picture of the spot and we’ll advise.

Why fried-to-order beats a buffet

Barbecues cook in batches, and someone has to stand over the grill. With a van, the host gets to enjoy the day. Fish and chip van prices depend on the booking. A short service and a long afternoon’s trading are very different bookings. Your quote spells it all out.

What you get with us

  • Rain doesn’t stop the fryers
  • A van that becomes part of the event
  • No kitchen needed
  • A clear quote before you book
