Fish and chip van hire in Harwell, cooked to order

The menu is short and classic: fish and chips, sausages and pies, plus the sides everyone expects. A short menu keeps the food fresh and the queue moving. We are often asked to cater visits to care homes and day centres and weddings and evening receptions, serving haddock and chips, cod and chips and gravy.

In a smaller place like Harwell, a garden party with the van on the drive is often the simplest option: no hire fees, and fish and chips for everyone without anyone stuck in the kitchen. Let us know how the van reaches the house. Every portion is cooked to order on the day, never cooked in advance and left in a hot cabinet, and handed over as soon as it’s ready.

A fish and chip van in Harwell: local details

Harwell is about 2 miles west of Didcot, in Oxfordshire. From the centre of Harwell to the outskirts, the service works the same way: fish and chips fried to order, served hot and quoted clearly. We cover 443 places across Oxfordshire. We serve events right across the region, from Harwell to Oxford (about 11 miles away).

For a christening or celebration after a service at a church such as Church of St Matthew, the van can serve at a hall or home nearby. PTAs at schools such as Harwell Primary School often look for a hot-food stall for fairs and sports days. Harwell is within about 7 miles of the North Wessex Downs National Landscape. Ask your venue about vehicle access.

We take the van to events all over OX11 and the streets around it. That could mean an event at a home on High Street, Loder Road and The Styles, as long as there is somewhere for the van. If your venue is just outside Harwell, we also cover West Hagbourne (2 miles south-east), Coscote (2 miles east), Upton (2 miles south-east), Chilton (2 miles south) and East Hagbourne (2 miles east). We also serve nearby towns such as Oxford (11 miles north), Abingdon-on-Thames (5 miles north), Witney (15 miles north-west), Wantage (6 miles west), Grove (6 miles west) and Faringdon (13 miles west).

Nearby you’ll also find Atlas Computer Laboratory (2 miles south-west) and Abingdon Community Hospital (4.8 miles north). The countryside around Harwell includes Churn Hill and Mowbray Fields.

  • Schools near Harwell include UTC Oxfordshire (0.9 miles north-east) and UTC Oxfordshire (0.9 miles north-east)
  • Nearby, you will find The Crispin pub (within half a mile north-east)

Working with your venue

If you are booking for a business, tell us how you’d like to handle the booking and payment, and we will explain how it works. We can work with your facilities team on access and timings.

Hosting at home? Send a picture of where the van would park, and we will let you know if the van will fit.

Takeaway run or book a van?

Weighing up a takeaway order against booking a van? Think about numbers, timing and how hot you want the food. We’re happy to send a quote so you can compare.

Ordering from a local shop? Call ahead and collect at the last minute. For a crowd, a van is usually simpler.

Is a fish and chip van right for your event?

Cold buffets are easy but forgettable, and nothing’s hot on a cool evening. A chip van cooks to order and serves hot. The price depends on numbers, the menu and how long we serve, plus travel and access. Every booking gets its own quote.

Why us?

  • A menu almost everyone likes
  • A van that becomes part of the event
  • A clear quote before booking
  • Works on wet days as well as sunny ones

Space, access and the venue

We will be honest if a spot won’t work, and help find another. The main points are:

  • A spot near your guests
  • Light near the van and the queue for evening service
  • The site’s agreement to a catering van

Not sure about the spot? Send us a picture and we’ll tell you honestly.

The process

Expect a friendly, organised set-up. Arrival and serving times are agreed beforehand, park on the agreed spot, and get on with frying and serving. Around midsummer it stays light in Harwell until about 9:25pm; by late September sunset is nearer 7:10pm, so summer evening service is normally in daylight. For winter events, when it’s dark by about 3:55pm, the van and the queue need lighting.

  1. Send us your date, numbers and address.
  2. We check the route in and send a price.
  3. We arrive in good time to set up.
  4. Fish goes into the batter and straight into the fryer, to order.
  5. We serve hot from the hatch and pack up when we are done.

Before we arrive

  • Keep space clear for guests at the hatch
  • Pick a flat, firm place for the van to park
  • Check the venue or landowner is happy for the van to park

Looking after everyone

Allergies are taken seriously. Help us by following these steps:

  • Collect allergies with your RSVPs
  • Flag any coeliac guests, not just gluten-free preferences
  • Send allergies to us in writing
  • Keep the menu short to keep the queue moving

On the day, you shouldn’t have to think about the food. We park, set up, fry and serve, and keep in touch with you about timings.

Bunting or festoon lights around the van make it part of the decorations.
