Fish and chip van hire for Heart's Delight events

How our fish and chip van hire works in Heart's Delight

Fish and chips is generous food: big pieces of fish, crisp batter and a mountain of chips. It makes the food a talking point. We serve curry sauce, pie and chips and haddock and chips, and typical bookings are for big birthdays and staff thank-you lunches.

In a rural place like Heart's Delight, fish and chips in a field feels just right. Let us know about access and ground conditions. We keep the menu short: fewer choices means fresher food and shorter queues.

How the day works

Nothing gathers a crowd like the smell of fish and chips. Fish goes into the batter and straight into the fryer, with chips cooked in batches as the queue moves. In Heart's Delight, the sun sets at about 9:15pm in late June and about 7:00pm in late September, so summer evening service is normally in daylight. For winter events, when it’s dark by about 3:50pm, the van and the queue need lighting.

  1. Get in touch with the basics: when, where and roughly how many.
  2. Show us where the van would go, and we will confirm it works.
  3. Closer to the day, we confirm the arrival time and serving time.
  4. The van rolls up, the hatch opens and the fryers get going for your guests.
  5. Last portion served, we tidy up and head off.

How to prepare

  • Let us know the serving time
  • Confirm numbers and dietary needs before the day
  • Leave room in front of the hatch for a queue

Heart's Delight questions

Can the van go to venues in the Kent Downs National Landscape?

Yes. Some venues there have rules about vehicles and ground, so check with yours. We’ll work to whatever the site needs.

Can you serve after a service at Church of St Peter and St Paul?

Yes, at a nearby hall, home or venue with somewhere for the van. Churches rarely have space for a catering van, so the food is normally elsewhere. Send us the address.

Can you cater for allergies?

Tell us about allergies when you book, and we will give you the allergen information.

Is the food cooked at the event?

Yes, always. We fry to order in the van at your venue, and serve straight from the hatch.

Can you go on a lawn or field?

Typically, if it is firm and dry. Soft, wet ground can trap any vehicle, so have a hard-surface back-up.

What happens when we hire the van?

The van parks at your venue, we fry fresh and serve from the hatch.

Can we choose cod or haddock?

Both are on our menu; we’ll agree the choice when we quote.

How long will the queue be?

It depends on numbers, the menu and how people arrive. Give us your numbers and service window, and we will plan to keep the queue moving.

Planning for dietary needs

With a bit of planning, dietary needs are easier to handle. Here are a few tips:

  • Count children separately
  • Let us know if anyone has coeliac disease
  • Send allergies to us in writing
  • Plan something for guests whose needs we can’t meet

The oil needs time to come up to temperature, so we arrive well before service. If timings shift, we adapt.

A string of bunting by the van makes a lovely photo.

What affects the price in Heart's Delight

Each booking is quoted on its own, based on a few main things:

  • Access and parking
  • Numbers
  • Travel, tolls and road charges
  • The date and time of year

Dates make a difference: summer Saturdays and December Fridays are the busiest days of the year. Ask about your date early.

Getting an accurate quote

You don’t need every detail fixed to get a quote, but these help:

  • The venue or postcode
  • Dietary needs, with numbers
  • A photo of the parking spot
  • The date and time of the event

The more you tell us, the more accurate the quote: where the van would park, how to get in, numbers and timings. Photos of the spot and the way in help. To send your details, use our quote form.

Is a fish and chip van right for your event?

Plated meals need a kitchen and a bigger team. A fish and chip van needs a level spot and permission to park, and the food is cooked to order. The price depends on numbers, the menu and how long we serve, plus travel and access. Every booking gets its own quote.

Why us?

  • A clear quote before you book

Occasions we serve in Heart's Delight

It needs no kitchen, so it is at home in car parks, yards and fields where plated meals are hard.

Whatever brings people together, fish and chips from the hatch goes down well. We regularly serve:

  • Fish and chip days at care homes
  • Wakes and gatherings after a funeral
  • Staff lunches and team days
  • Evening wedding food

School fairs and fundraisers, for a school such as Minterne Community Junior School, can book the van as a food stall.

Choosing a fish and chip van

Cannot we just order from the chip shop?

Ordering from a local shop? Call ahead and collect at the last minute. For a crowd, a van is typically simpler.

You could do a chip-shop run for everyone yourself, but it rarely works for a crowd. Long waits and a drive home mean food arrives lukewarm and soggy. A van fries it right there, so it is crisp.

For planners, venues and organisers

Planners and coordinators can contact us directly, and we’ll keep everyone informed on the day.

Venues often have their own rules about outside caterers and vehicles: where a van can park, access times and the paperwork they want. Tell us what your venue needs and we’ll work through them with you.

What comes out of the fryer

Sausage and chips

Sausage and chips is the go-to for anyone who isn’t a fish fan, especially with curry sauce.

Mushy peas

Mushy peas are made from dried marrowfat peas, soaked and cooked until soft. They’re the classic side with fish and chips.
