Questions from Little Portugal

What about parking in Little Portugal?

It can be, so tell us about driveways, yards, car parks or a council suspension. We will plan around it.

Could you trade in Larkhall Park?

Only with permission from the park’s owner, normally the council. Ask them first, and tell us what they say.

Where can the van park?

Not much: a drive, a car park, a yard or a firm lawn, with a clear way in. Send us a picture if you’re not sure.

Do you have allergen information?

We provide allergen information for everything we serve. Battered fish contains fish and, in standard batter, gluten. Tell us about allergies in advance.

Can the van come to Little Portugal?

Yes. We take the van across London and the South East, including Little Portugal. To check your date, send us your details through our quote form.

How does fish and chip van hire work?

We arrive with the van, cook fresh on site, and serve when you are ready to eat.

When do you arrive?

That depends on your numbers and timings. We confirm all the timings beforehand.

What’s on the menu?

Fish and chips, of course, with sausages and pies for anyone who does not want fish. The sides are mushy peas, curry sauce and gravy.

Little Portugal is about 1 mile north of Stockwell, in Greater London. We cover Little Portugal as standard, so all we need is your date, a parking spot and a time to serve. We serve all 764 towns and villages in Greater London, from the larger towns to small villages.

If you are gathering after a service at a church like St Stephen's Church, a nearby hall car park or drive suits the van. If you are organising a summer fair for a school like Platanos College, a chip van is a crowd-pleaser.

We serve events across the SW9, SW8 and SW1P postcode area. Local streets include Kay Road, Lett Road and Rita Road; an event on any of them works well with a drive or nearby car park. With the A203 close by, Little Portugal is simple for us to get to for your event. DIY versus a fish and chip van

Frying for a crowd at home is not a good idea: hot oil and a busy party are a bad combination. Leave the frying to a van built for it.

Collecting fish and chips for a crowd yourself is possible, but it is hard work. By the time you’ve queued, paid and driven back, the batter has gone soft. With a van, it is fried on the spot.

Is a fish and chip van right for your event?

A big takeaway order arrives late and lukewarm. The van cooks right there, so it is crisp when it is handed over. A chip van often compares well with a plated meal, because it needs no kitchen and no crockery hire. Ask us for a quote.

  • Everything cooked to order at your event

  • Mushy peas, curry sauce and gravy on the side

See our prices page or the cost guide.

How the day works

There’s very little for you to do on the day: point us to the spot and get on with your event. The frying and serving are down to us. Around midsummer it stays light in Little Portugal until about 9:20pm; by late September sunset is nearer 7:05pm, so summer evening service is normally in daylight. In December it is dark by about 3:55pm, so winter events need lighting by the van.

  1. You share your date, numbers and address.
  2. We check access for the van and quote.
  3. We arrive early to park and heat the fryers.
  4. Fish goes into the batter and straight into the fryer, to order.
  5. Service is straight from the hatch, then we pack up.

Getting ready for the day

  • Confirm the van is allowed on site
  • Ensure the van can get in
  • Pick a flat, firm place for the van to park

Looking after everyone

Nearly every event has some special diets. To look after them:

  • Tell us about vegetarian and vegan guests early
  • Have a back-up for anyone who can’t eat from the van
  • Give us separate numbers for children
  • Flag any coeliac guests, not just gluten-free preferences

Once everyone is fed, we pack up, leaving the pitch tidy.

A gazebo by the van keeps the queue dry.
