How our fish and chip van hire works in World's End

Keep it simple, or plan every detail: a van that serves as people arrive, or service at a set time. We’ll suggest what suits your event. We serve gravy, cod and chips and mushy peas, and typical bookings are for birthday celebrations and company team days.

London streets around World's End can be narrow and lined with parked cars, so a drive, yard or car park is normally simplest. Send us a picture of the spot. Your quote spells out what’s included: serving times, the menu and anything else agreed.

How the day works

Setting up takes a little while, because the oil has to come up to temperature, so we’re there in good time before you want to eat. Evenings in World's End stay light until about 9:20pm in June, but by late September sunset is around 7:05pm; once it’s dark, we need light by the hatch and the queue.

  1. Get in touch with the basics: when, where and roughly how many.
  2. Show us where the van would go, and we will confirm it works.
  3. A week or so before, we confirm timings and numbers.
  4. We park, open the hatch and start frying for your guests.
  5. Last portion served, we tidy up and head off.

Getting ready for the day

  • Name one person we can call on the day
  • Check the way in for low branches, cables and narrow gates
  • Plan a bit of cover near the hatch if rain is likely

Cannot we just order from the chip shop?

If you do order from a chip shop, ring well ahead and collect as close to eating time as you can. For anything more than a handful of people, a van is usually the easier option.

A DIY buffet works for small groups. For larger numbers, or when you want hot food, a van takes the pressure off, and nobody has to miss the event.

Your questions about a fish and chip van in World's End

Could you trade in Oakwood Park?

Only with permission from the park’s owner, typically the council. Ask them first, and tell us what they say.

What’s the nearest station to World's End?

Grange Park station, about 0.6 miles east of the centre.

Do you need power or water?

Tell us what’s available at the site when you enquire, and we’ll say what we need.

Cod or haddock?

Let us know which you’d prefer and we’ll confirm the menu.

How soon do we need to book?

The sooner the better. Peak dates go quickly, so it pays to ask early.

Is the fish gluten-free?

Standard batter is made with wheat flour, so battered fish contains gluten. Tell us about coeliac guests when you enquire, and we’ll be straight with you about what’s possible.

What areas do you cover?

London and the South East: Kent, Surrey, East and West Sussex, Hampshire, Berkshire, Bucks, Oxfordshire and the Isle of Wight, including World's End.

Is grass a problem?

Generally, if it is firm and dry. After heavy rain, soft grass can be a problem for any vehicle, so plan a back-up spot.

Allergies and dietary needs

We need to know about dietary needs and allergies in advance, and we’ll tell you honestly what we can offer. To get it right:

  • Fewer choices mean faster service
  • Tell us about coeliac guests specifically
  • Put allergy details in writing
  • Collect allergies with your RSVPs

Once everyone is fed, we pack up, quietly and quickly.

Tables or benches nearby help people eat comfortably.

Before you choose a spot

Most drives, car parks, yards and firm lawns can take the van, but there are a few things to check:

  • Flat, firm ground for the van
  • Light near the van and the queue for evening service
  • Space for people to queue at the hatch

World's End is in London, within the Ultra Low Emission Zone, and parking can be tight: let us know about off-street space or permits.

If you are unsure, send a picture of the space and the way in, and we will say what we think.

A chip van compared with other options

Ordering a takeaway for a crowd means long waits and food that cools on the journey. The van cooks right there, so the batter is still crisp. Larger groups usually cost less per head, because the van, travel and set-up cost much the same either way. Tell us your numbers for an accurate price.
