A chip van near Crouch

About our funeral and wake catering in Crouch

Food is fried to order, so it is hot when people arrive, after a long, cold day. On the menu are sausage and chips, mushy peas and haddock and chips, and we’re often booked for celebrations of life and small family memorials.

For a wake near Crouch, a farmhouse or village hall frequently works well. The menu is short on purpose: fewer choices means fresher food and shorter queues.

Why fried-to-order beats a buffet

A pub or venue may cater a wake themselves. A van works where they do not, or at home. When you compare quotes, check what each one includes: service time, menu, travel, any minimum and VAT. We set ours out clearly.

How to compare vans

Can’t we just order from the chip shop?

For a small group, making your own food can work. For bigger numbers, a van makes life easier, and you get to enjoy the day.

DIY food keeps costs down, but the host spends the event serving. With a fish and chip van, you get hot food without the work.

Allergies and dietary needs

With a bit of planning, dietary needs are easier to handle. Here are a few tips:

  • Ask your funeral director to help estimate numbers
  • Ask the venue about the van
  • Allow a little extra
  • Ask a friend to run a tea table

When everyone has eaten, we pack up quietly.

A favourite cake can be a lovely touch.

Planners, venues and businesses

If your event is in a public place, such as a park or a street, check what permission you need first. Ask the council or landowner early.

For larger numbers, tell us how long you have for food, so we can plan how to keep the queue short. Staggering groups helps a lot.

What a fish and chip van costs

The price comes down to a few factors:

  • Service time
  • How easy the site is to reach
  • How far we travel
  • Numbers

Distance and any road charges make a difference, so it helps to give us the postcode.

What we need to know

When you contact us, it helps to tell us:

  • A picture of the space and the way in
  • Rough numbers for adults and children
  • Where the van would park
  • The date and when you’d like to eat

We only need a few details to quote: date, address, numbers and serving time. To send them, send us your details through our quote form.

Before you choose a spot

Plenty of places work for the van, but a few things matter:

  • A level hardstanding, drive or firm lawn
  • A clear area by the serving hatch
  • A lit spot if service runs after dark

If you’re unsure, send a picture of the space and the way in, and we’ll say what we think.

Popular choices

  • Haddock and chips
  • Cod and chips
  • Gravy
  • Sausage and chips

The process

We arrive on time, parks where we agreed and the hatch goes up. When the fryers are up to heat, service starts at the time you asked for. In Crouch, it is dark by about 7:00pm in late September and 3:55pm in December, so a lit path to the van is a kindness to older guests.

  1. Start with three things: the date, the place and a rough headcount.
  2. Show us where the van would go, and we’ll confirm it works.
  3. A week or so before, we confirm timings and numbers.
  4. The van rolls up, the hatch opens and the fryers get going for family and friends.
  5. Last portion served, we tidy up and head off.

Getting ready for the day

  • Clear the route for the van
  • Share the timings for the day
  • Pick a flat, firm place for the van to park
