Fresh fish and chips in Hampstead

About our funeral and wake catering in Hampstead

Food is fried to order, so it’s hot when people arrive. For gatherings after the committal and memorial events and anniversaries, we will put together a menu of cod and chips, gravy and pie and chips.

For a wake in Hampstead, a hall or club with a car park is frequently simplest, though home can work with a drive. You will know what’s included before booking: the date, the service time and the menu, with no surprises on the day.

Diets, allergies and planning

Most events have a few guests with dietary needs. To look after them:

  • Mention allergies you know about
  • Allow a little extra
  • Ask your funeral director to help estimate numbers
  • Keep the serving time flexible

We arrive in good time and park discreetly before guests return from the service.

Wakes in Hampstead: venues and practical details

Hampstead is about 3 miles north-west of City of Westminster, in Greater London. Across the NW3 area, we can fry fresh for your guests. We serve 764 places in Greater London.

With the A1 and A502 nearby, it’s easy for family travelling by car to reach Hampstead. If there is not room at home, a hall or club near Hampstead may suit.

For wakes in NW3, NW6, NW11 and N2, we just need to know where the van can park and a serving time. We can serve a wake on streets such as Hampstead High Street, New End Square and The Mount Square, wherever the van can park. Hampstead sits on or near the A1 and A502, so getting the van to your wake is simple. Neighbouring places where we serve wakes include Greenhill (1 mile north-east), West Hampstead (1 mile west), Fortune Green (1 mile west), Vale of Health (1 mile north) and South Hampstead (1 mile south). Further out, we also take the van to London (5 miles south-east), City of Westminster (3 miles south-east), Marylebone (3 miles south-east), Kensington (4 miles south), St Pancras (3 miles south-east) and Shoreditch (5 miles south-east). Should I sort the food myself?

You could do a chip-shop run for everyone yourself, but it rarely works for a crowd. By the time you’ve queued, paid and driven back, the batter has gone soft. A van fries it right there, so it is crisp.

DIY food keeps costs down, but the host spends the event serving. With a fish and chip van, you get hot food without the work.

What the van needs

We will be honest if a spot will not work, and suggest an alternative. The main points are:

  • A clear way in, with no low branches, cables or narrow gates
  • A level hardstanding, drive or firm lawn
  • A lit spot if service runs after dark

As a London location, Hampstead is inside the Ultra Low Emission Zone, and parking takes planning: tell us about driveways, yards, car parks or a council parking suspension.

If you are unsure, send a photo of the space and the way in, and we’ll say what we think before you book.

  • Village hall wakes
  • Scattering of ashes gatherings

Choosing a fish and chip van

A chip van compared with other options

A formal meal doesn’t always suit. Fish and chips lets people mingle. Many fish and chip vans set a minimum, because the van, fuel and travel cost the same for a small group. Ask us what applies to your wake.

Why us?

  • Classic food your guests already know
  • The classic sides: peas, curry sauce and gravy
  • Served hot, straight from the hatch
  • Everything cooked to order at your event

Gravy

A pot of gravy turns chips into comfort food, especially in winter.

Mushy peas

No fish and chips is complete without mushy peas for many people, and they’re on the menu.

Planners, venues and businesses

If you are booking for a business, tell us how you’d like to handle the booking and payment, and we will explain how it works. We are happy to liaise with facilities on parking and timings.

For larger numbers, tell us how long you have for food, so we can plan how to keep the queue short. Staggering groups helps a lot.

The process

We arrive in good time before you want to eat, park the van and get the fryers going. Guests normally gather round the hatch as soon as we open. In winter, it is dark in Hampstead by about 3:55pm, so for an afternoon wake, light near the van and the door helps. In summer, there’s daylight until about 9:20pm.

  1. Start with three things: the date, the place and a rough headcount.
  2. Show us where the van would go, and we’ll confirm it works.
  3. A week or so before, we confirm timings and numbers.
  4. We park, open the hatch and start frying for family and friends.
  5. Once the last portion is out, we pack up and go.

Preparing for the day

  • Name one person we can call on the day
  • Check the venue or landowner is happy for the van to park
  • Keep space clear for guests at the hatch

Hampstead questions

Can the van park in Kilburn Grange Park?

Only if the landowner, typically the council, allows it. Check with them first.

We are gathering after a service at St John-at-Hampstead church: can you come?

Yes, at a nearby hall, home or venue with somewhere for the van. Food is usually served at the reception venue rather than the church. Tell us where you’ll gather.

Can you cater a wake at short notice?

Wakes are frequently arranged quickly, so send us the date and we’ll answer straight away.

What do you bring?

We bring the van and everything we need to cook. You provide a suitable spot and permission to park.

Do you come to Hampstead?

Yes. We take the van across London and the South East, including Hampstead. To check your date, send us your details through our quote form.

What if the service runs late?

Of course. We serve when people are ready.

What happens if it rains?

We cook inside the van, so rain doesn’t stop us. Guests will appreciate cover near the hatch.

Do you serve wakes at home?

Yes, with a suitable spot for the van.

  • Fried fresh to order in the van at your event
  • Cod, haddock and chips, sausages and pies
  • The van comes to you: homes, venues, workplaces and fields
  • Served at the time you choose, from the hatch
