Families holding a service at Church of St John the Evangelist frequently gather afterwards at a nearby hall, where the van can park.

  • What happens if plans change
  • The deposit and payment dates
  • If the price includes VAT

Our booking checklist

Takeaway run or book a van?

Not sure whether to order in or book a van? Consider your numbers and how fresh you want it. Ask us for a quote and compare.

Collecting fish and chips for a crowd yourself is possible, but it’s hard work. By the time you’ve queued, paid and driven back, the batter has gone soft. With a van, it’s fried on the spot.

Planning for dietary needs

Dietary needs are easiest to plan with some notice. We suggest:

  • Mention allergies you know about
  • Check the hall has an urn
  • Make sure older relatives can sit
  • Choose a friend to be our contact

A friend or the funeral director can be our contact.

Napkins and bins near the van keep things tidy.

Why fried-to-order beats a buffet

Compared with a buffet, a van gives everyone a hot meal, and there’s less waste when numbers are uncertain. Compared with a sit-down meal, a fish and chip van is frequently good value, because it needs no kitchen and no crockery hire. Ask us for a quote.

Why us?

  • No kitchen needed
  • Works on wet days as well as sunny ones
  • Mushy peas, curry sauce and gravy on the side
  • Everything cooked to order at your event

How the day works

Your timings come first. If things run late, we hold off cooking until you’re ready, so nothing is cooked before it’s needed. Summer evenings in Penge stay light until about 9:20pm, but in December it is dark by about 3:55pm, so plan lighting near the door.

  1. Send us your date, numbers and address.
  2. We check the route in and send a price.
  3. We arrive early to park and heat the fryers.
  4. Fish goes into the batter and straight into the fryer, to order.
  5. Service is straight from the hatch, then we pack up.

How to prepare

  • Choose a level, firm spot for the van
  • Clear the route for the van
  • Plan where the queue will stand

What comes out of the fryer

Sausage and chips

For anyone who doesn’t fancy fish, there’s sausage and chips, and it is a favourite with children.

Gravy

A pot of gravy turns chips into comfort food, especially in winter.

How we price fish and chips for the wake

Each booking is quoted on its own, based on a few main things:

  • Any minimum charge
  • Numbers
  • Parking and the way in
  • Distance and any road charges

Most vans have a minimum charge, because the van, fuel and travel cost the same for a small group. Ask us what applies to your wake.

What to tell us

When you contact us, it helps to tell us:

  • Where you’d like the van to go
  • Dietary needs, with numbers
  • The address or venue name
  • A photo of the parking spot

Send us the date, the address or SE20 postcode and rough numbers, plus when you’d like to eat, and we’ll reply with a quote. To get started, fill in our quote form.

Your questions about fish and chips for the wake in Penge

What’s the nearest station to Penge?

Penge has its own station: Penge West station.

What about parking in Penge?

London parking needs planning: let us know about off-street space or permits. We will plan around it.

How much space do you need?

Not much: a drive, a car park, a yard or a firm lawn, with a clear way in. If in doubt, send a photo.

Can you go on a lawn or field?

That depends on the weather and the ground. Tell us about it when you enquire, and we’ll advise.

Do you clear up afterwards?

We pack up and leave the pitch tidy when service is finished. Let us know about bins for guests.

What if we only have street parking?

That depends on local parking rules. A drive, car park or yard is generally easier; for the street, check the council’s rules.

Can coeliacs eat the battered fish?

Not as standard: batter is normally made with wheat flour. Tell us about any coeliac guests and we will explain the options before you book.

What can guests choose from?

Chip-shop favourites: cod or haddock and chips, sausages and pies, with mushy peas, curry sauce and gravy. See the menu.

Where the van can park in Penge

We’ll be honest if a spot will not work, and suggest an alternative. The main points are:

  • A level hardstanding, drive or firm lawn
  • Confirmation that the van can park there
  • A clear area by the serving hatch

Penge is in London, within the Ultra Low Emission Zone, and parking can be tight: let us know about off-street space or permits.

Not sure about the spot? Send us a photo and we’ll tell you honestly before booking.

From the hatch

  • Haddock and chips
  • Gravy
  • Mushy peas
  • Pie and chips
