Fresh fish and chips in Southend

Funeral and wake catering in Southend, fried fresh

It is an informal meal, which suits a gathering where people mingle. On the menu are haddock and chips, gravy and cod and chips, and typical bookings are for gatherings after scattering ashes and wakes at a pub or venue with outside space.

In a small place like Southend, a wake might be at home, in a barn or at the village hall. Let us know about access. We cook inside the van, right where your guests are, and the food reaches them hot and crisp.

FAQs for Southend

We are gathering after a service at Church of the Holy Trinity: can you come?

Yes, at a nearby hall, home or venue with somewhere for the van. Food is normally served at the reception venue rather than the church. Tell us where you’ll gather.

Is Southend too small for a chip van?

Not at all. We serve villages and hamlets as well as towns. Tell us about lanes, gates and the ground.

Can you cater for allergies?

Tell us about allergies when you book, and we’ll give you the allergen information.

Can you be flexible on the day?

We plan for delays. We’ll agree a serving time and stay flexible.

Do you need power or water?

A suitable spot for the van and permission to park there. Mention any power or water available and we’ll take it from there.

Is grass a problem?

It depends on the ground. Let us know what the ground is like, and send a picture if you can.

Do you clear up afterwards?

We clear the van’s area after service. Let us know about bins for guests.

What can guests choose from?

Fish and chips, of course, plus sausage or pie and chips. The sides are mushy peas, curry sauce and gravy.

Step by step

Your timings come first. If the day runs behind, we hold off cooking until you’re ready, so nothing is cooked before it’s needed. In winter, it is dark in Southend by about 4:00pm, so for an afternoon wake, light near the van and the door helps. Summer wakes have daylight well into the evening.

  1. Start with three things: the date, the place and a rough headcount.
  2. Show us where the van would go, and we will confirm it works.
  3. A week or so before, we confirm timings and numbers.
  4. The van rolls up, the hatch opens and the fryers get going for family and friends.
  5. Last portion served, we tidy up and head off.

Before we arrive

  • Check the venue or landowner is happy for the van to park
  • Plan a bit of cover near the hatch if rain is likely
  • Give us your final numbers and allergies

Is a fish and chip van right for your wake?

Next to a buffet, a van gives everyone a hot meal, and there’s less waste when numbers are uncertain. A chip van frequently compares well with a plated meal, because it needs no kitchen and no crockery hire. We will send you a quote.

Cod and chips

Cod has big, soft white flakes and a mild flavour, and it’s what most people in the south ask for. We batter it and fry it to order.

Gravy

In the north and the Midlands, gravy is the side of choice, and it is lovely with a pie.

Planning for dietary needs

Nearly every event has some special diets. To look after them:

  • Tell us about any close family with allergies
  • Plan seating for older guests
  • Allow for the service running over
  • Confirm the van can park at the hall

Seats for older guests near the hall or house help.

A favourite cake can be a lovely touch.

  • Cod, haddock and chips, sausages and pies
