What affects the price in Stubbles

Two events with the same numbers can cost different amounts, because of:

  • Parking and the way in
  • The minimum booking
  • Peak dates such as summer Saturdays
  • How long we serve

Cost depends on numbers, menu and service time, plus travel and access. We quote for each booking individually.

What to tell us

You do not need every detail fixed to get a quote, but these help:

  • Where you’d like the van to go
  • The date and when you’d like to eat
  • Where the event is
  • How to get in: gates, lanes and ground

Send us the date, the address or RG8 postcode and rough numbers, along with your serving time, and you’ll get a clear price. Just send us your details through our quote form.

How our funeral and wake catering works in Stubbles

Wakes are rarely planned months ahead, so ask as soon as you have the date. Popular choices include cod and chips, haddock and chips and sausage and chips, and we are regularly asked to cater a tribute meal and gatherings at a village hall or club.

In rural Stubbles, home or the hall is usual, with the van in the yard or car park. The fryers are in the van, so the cooking happens right there at your wake, so the batter is still crisp when it is handed over.

How the day works

Changes on the day are fine: we can start a little later or slow the pace. In summer, a wake in Stubbles has light until about 9:25pm, but in December it is dark by about 4:00pm.

  1. Start with three things: the date, the place and a rough headcount.
  2. Show us where the van would go, and we will confirm it works.
  3. Closer to the day, we confirm the arrival time and serving time.
  4. The van rolls up, the hatch opens and the fryers get going for family and friends.
  5. Once the last portion is out, we pack up and go.

Planning help

Diets, allergies and planning

With a bit of planning, dietary needs are easier to handle. A few tips:

  • Let us know of any allergies
  • Allow a little extra
  • Confirm the van can park at the hall
  • Plan seating for older guests

Give us a contact for the day who is not a close family member.

Some families add a favourite dessert or cake.

Your questions about fish and chips for the wake in Stubbles

How far is Stubbles from London?

About 46 miles from central London, and we cover it as standard.

We’re gathering after a service at Church of St Clement: can you come?

Yes, at a home, hall or venue nearby where the van can park. Food is usually served at the reception venue rather than the church. Tell us where you will gather.

Can the wake be at home?

Yes, with a suitable spot for the van.

Can the van come to Stubbles?

Yes. We cover London and the South East, and Stubbles is within our area. For a quote, fill in our quote form.

Can you cater for allergies?

Yes, we can tell you which allergens are in each item. Battered fish contains fish and, in standard batter, gluten. Send us any allergies in writing.

How long will the queue be?

A short menu and staggered groups keep things moving. Tell us your timings and we’ll advise.

How quickly can you come?

We understand the timescales, so ask and we’ll reply quickly.

What about guests who do not eat fish?

Sausage and chips and pie and chips are on the menu. Tell us about other diets and we will be honest about what’s possible.

For event organisers in Stubbles

Booking for a company? Tell us what your finance team needs, and we will explain how it works. We’re happy to liaise with facilities on parking and timings.

If your event is in a public place, such as a park or a street, check what permission you need first. Ask the council or landowner early.

Planning the van’s spot

A good parking spot makes the whole thing easier. We look for:

  • Light near the van and the queue for evening service
  • Space for people to queue at the hatch
  • Confirmation that the van can park there

If in doubt, send us a picture of the spot and we will advise.

Takeaway run or book a van?

Collecting fish and chips for a crowd yourself is possible, but it’s hard work. By the time you’ve queued, paid and driven back, the batter has gone soft. A van fries it right there, so it’s crisp.

Ordering from a local shop? Call ahead and collect at the last minute. For anything more than a handful of people, a van is normally the easier option.
