Book the van in The Mint

Takeaway run or book a van?

Collecting fish and chips for a crowd yourself is possible, but it is hard work. Long waits and a drive home mean food arrives lukewarm and soggy. A van fries it right there, so it’s crisp.

For a small group, making your own food can work. For larger numbers, or when you want hot food, a van takes the pressure off, and you get to enjoy the day.

Funeral and wake catering for your wake in The Mint

We understand that timings on the day can move, so we stay flexible. Typical bookings include celebrations of life and wakes at venues, serving haddock and chips, pie and chips and cod and chips.

In a small place like The Mint, a wake might be at home, in a barn or at the village hall. Let us know about access. The fryers are in the van, so the cooking happens right there at your wake, so the batter is still crisp when it is handed over.

What the van needs

Every site is different, so we’ll ask about yours when you contact us. Generally, we look for:

  • A clear way in, with no low branches, cables or narrow gates
  • Somewhere close to where people will eat
  • Space for people to queue at the hatch

If you are unsure, send a photo of the space and the way in, and we’ll say what we think before booking.

The process

We work to your timings. If things run late, we simply start frying a little later, so nothing is cooked before it is needed. Sunset in The Mint is about 7:05pm in late September and about 4:00pm in December; plan a lit path from the door to the van.

  1. Get in touch with the basics: when, where and roughly how many.
  2. Show us where the van would go, and we will confirm it works.
  3. Closer to the day, we confirm the arrival time and serving time.
  4. We park, open the hatch and start frying for family and friends.
  5. Once the last portion is out, we pack up and go.

Before we arrive

  • Name one person we can call on the day
  • Tell us when you want to eat
  • Arrange somewhere dry for the queue

Is a fish and chip van right for your wake?

A formal meal does not always suit. A van keeps it relaxed. A chip van often compares well with a plated meal, as there is no kitchen to hire and nothing to wash up. We’ll send you a quote.

Planners, venues and businesses

For big groups, the service window matters, so we can plan how to keep the queue short. Staggering groups helps a lot.

Diets, allergies and planning

With a bit of planning, dietary needs are easier to handle. Here are a few tips:

  • Use the funeral director’s experience on numbers
  • Mention allergies you know about
  • Build in time for delays
  • Allow a little extra

We start when you give the word.

Questions from The Mint

Is The Mint too small for a chip van?

No, we come to small places too. Tell us about lanes, gates and the ground.

Can you serve after a service at Hope Church?

Yes, at a nearby hall, home or venue with somewhere for the van. Food is generally served at the reception venue rather than the church. Tell us where you will gather.

Can the wake be at home?

Often, yes. Send us a picture of the drive or the road outside.

What does the van need?

Not much: a drive, a car park, a yard or a firm lawn, with a clear way in. Send us a photo if you are not sure.

When do you arrive?

It depends on numbers and the service time. We confirm all the timings beforehand.

Do you come to The Mint?
