Fish and chip van hire in E3: what to expect

Queuing at the hatch is half the experience. People gather, catch up and get their food straight from the fryer. Typical bookings include work Christmas parties and birthday celebrations, with cod and chips, haddock and chips and curry sauce.

It’s a relaxed, well-organised set-up. We agree arrival and serving times in advance, park on the agreed spot, and get on with frying and serving.

  1. First, tell us about your event.
  2. We check the date and where the van will park, then send a quote.
  3. Timings and the van’s spot are agreed in advance.
  4. We cook to order on the day for your guests.
  5. We serve from the hatch, then leave the pitch tidy.

Fish and chip van hire in E3: local guide

From Stratford, Hackney and Bethnal Green to 0 villages and hamlets, bookings across E3 range from town-centre sites to farmyards, and a chip van suits every kind of setting. In towns, plan parking and access; in villages, tell us about lanes and ground.

Mile End: For a christening or celebration after a service at a church such as Holy Trinity Church, the van can serve at a hall or home nearby. School fairs and fundraisers, for a school such as Beatrice Tate School, can book the van as a food stall. By late September, sunset in Mile End is around 7:05pm, and in December it is nearer 3:55pm. For anything after that, plan lights for the queue.

A chip van compared with other options

A big takeaway order arrives late and lukewarm. A van fries on the spot, so the batter is still crisp.

Looking after everyone

A little planning makes sure everyone is looked after. Try these:

  • Keep the menu short to keep the queue moving
  • Tell us how many children are coming
  • Tell us about coeliac guests specifically
  • Tell us about vegetarian and vegan guests early

After service, we pack up, leaving the pitch tidy.

Tables or benches nearby help people eat comfortably.

What the van needs

Every site is different, so we ask about the spot and the way in when you contact us. In general, we need:

  • A lit spot if service runs after dark
  • Permission from the venue or landowner for the van
  • A level hardstanding, drive or firm lawn

Working with your venue

If you’re organising for someone else, whether you are a planner, a facilities manager or an organiser, we’ll work directly with you and the venue. It saves passing messages back and forth.

Venues frequently have their own rules about outside caterers and vehicles: where a van can park, access times and the paperwork they want. Tell us what your venue needs and we will work through them with you.

What comes out of the fryer

Cod and chips

Cod and chips is the meal most people picture when they think of a chip shop. Cooked fresh at the hatch, it’s hot, crisp and generous.

Mushy peas

Mushy peas are a must for plenty of fish and chip fans.

Common questions in E3

Can you cook in the rain?

We carry on in the rain, because the cooking happens inside. Soft ground after heavy rain is the bigger issue, so have a hard-surface spot in mind.

Do you have a kids’ option?

Yes. Sausage and chips is a favourite with children. Include children in your numbers.

Where do you take the van?

London and South East England: Kent, Surrey, East and West Sussex, Hampshire, Berkshire, Bucks, Oxfordshire and the Isle of Wight, including E3.

Do you clear up afterwards?

We pack up and leave the pitch tidy when service is finished. Let us know about bins for guests.

What does the van need?

Not much: a drive, a car park, a yard or a firm lawn, that the van can reach easily. Send us a photo if you are not sure.

What food do you serve?

Chip-shop favourites: cod or haddock and chips, sausages and pies, plus mushy peas, curry sauce and gravy. See the menu.

When do you arrive?

We arrive well before service to park and heat the fryers. We will agree arrival and serving times with you.

  • Fried fresh to order in the van at your event
  • Cod, haddock and chips, sausages and pies
  • The van comes to you: homes, venues, workplaces and fields
  • Served at the time you choose, from the hatch
