Fresh fish and chips in Sandown

What the van needs

A fish and chip van is a vehicle, so the spot matters, so a few things need checking. Here’s what we look for:

  • A level hardstanding, drive or firm lawn
  • A clear way in, with no low branches, cables or narrow gates
  • Light near the van and the queue for evening service

For somewhere as remote as Sandown, early notice helps us plan the trip.

If in doubt, send us a picture of the spot and we’ll advise before booking.

From the hatch

  • Sausage and chips
  • Haddock and chips
  • Mushy peas
  • Curry sauce
  • Evening fish and chips
  • Cod and chips

How our wedding fish and chip van works in Sandown

Some couples book the van for the wedding breakfast at a relaxed, informal wedding. Most book it for the evening, when it is most welcome. We are frequently asked to cater barn weddings and marquee and garden weddings, serving mushy peas, curry sauce and haddock and chips.

A farm or garden wedding near Sandown suits a chip van. We need a firm spot and access. Tell us about dietary needs and allergies when you enquire, and we’ll be straight with you about what we can do before booking.

How it works

You will know we are ready when the smell of frying drifts over. From then on, people come up as they’re ready. At midsummer, sunset in Sandown is about 9:20pm, so the van can serve before or after your sunset photos. Sunset is around 8:55pm in late May and 7:10pm in late September.

  1. Get in touch with the basics: when, where and roughly how many.
  2. A photo of the parking spot helps us check the van will fit.
  3. Closer to the day, we confirm the arrival time and serving time.
  4. The van rolls up, the hatch opens and the fryers get going for your guests.
  5. Last portion served, we tidy up and head off.

Getting ready for the day

  • Let us know the serving time
  • Name one person we can call on the day
  • Keep space clear for guests at the hatch

Sandown is about 10 miles south of Gosport, in the Isle of Wight. Wherever your wedding is in the PO36 area, we will come to your venue, home or workplace. Sandown is one of 125 places in the Isle of Wight where we bring the van. You can also see our page for Southampton, about 21 miles away.

Wedding photographers in the area often head for Alverstone Mead, and the countryside around Sandown suits an outdoor reception. After a ceremony at a church like Christ Church, many couples move to a marquee or hall nearby, which is where the van comes in. The sea is within about a mile, perfect for a seaside-themed wedding. We will plan a sheltered spot for the queue.

Questions from Sandown

We’re gathering after a service at Christ Church: can you come?

Yes, at a home, hall or venue nearby where the van can park. Churches rarely have space for a catering van, so the food is generally elsewhere. Tell us where you’ll gather.

Which station is closest to Sandown?

Sandown has its own station: Sandown station.

Which areas do you serve?

London and South East England: Kent, Surrey, Sussex, Hampshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire and the Isle of Wight, including Sandown.

Do you do anything other than fish?

Sausage and chips and pie and chips are on the menu. Tell us about other diets and we will be honest about what’s possible.

Do you have allergen information?

We provide allergen information for everything we serve. Battered fish contains fish and, in standard batter, gluten. Tell us about allergies in advance.

What happens if it rains?

We cook inside the van, so rain doesn’t stop us. Guests will appreciate cover near the hatch.

What time will you serve?

Whenever suits your day. Most couples go for just after the first dance.

How long does set-up take?

It depends on numbers and the service time. We confirm all the timings beforehand.

Mushy peas

Mushy peas are a must for plenty of fish and chip fans.

Cod and chips

Cod and chips is the meal most people picture when they think of a chip shop. Fried to order in the van, it’s hot, crisp and generous.

Planning for dietary needs

Tell us about dietary needs and allergies early, and we’ll tell you honestly what we can offer. To get it right:

  • Name a friend or coordinator as our contact
  • Count suppliers working late
  • Not every evening guest eats: ask us how many to plan for
  • Ask about dietary needs on the invitation

Evening food typically goes out between about 8pm and 9:30pm, after the first dance.

Napkins or wet wipes by the van are a kindness to anyone in their wedding best.

Why fried-to-order beats a buffet

A hog roast is a classic for weddings, but it is one dish, and some guests don’t eat pork. A van gives a choice of fish, sausage or pie. Cost depends on numbers, menu and service time, along with distance and access to the site. We quote for each booking individually.

Why us?

  • Rain does not stop the fryers
  • Mushy peas, curry sauce and gravy on the side
  • Everything cooked to order at your event
  • Events in Sandown and across the Isle of Wight

See our prices page and the cost guide.

For event organisers in Sandown

For big groups, the service window matters, so we can plan how to keep the queue short. Staggering groups helps a lot.

Hosting at home? Send a photo of where the van would park, and we will let you know if the van will fit.

What affects the price in Sandown

There are no hidden charges: the quote reflects:

  • Parking and the way in
  • Whether a minimum applies
  • Your choice of menu
  • Peak dates such as summer Saturdays

Compared with a sit-down meal, a fish and chip van is frequently good value, as there is no kitchen to hire and nothing to wash up. Ask us for a quote.
