Wedding fish and chip van in The Sands, fried fresh

A chip van is at home at barn, marquee and garden weddings, because there’s frequently a yard or track close to the party. Popular choices include sausage and chips, mushy peas and curry sauce, and we’re regularly asked to cater weddings in a marquee or garden and informal weddings.

A wedding in a small place like The Sands often means a field, a barn or a family garden. A chip van is made for that: no kitchen needed, just a firm spot near the party. Let us know about access and ground. Everything we need comes with the van, and we pack up and leave the spot as we found it.

Working with your venue

For repeat bookings, such as regular staff lunches or annual fairs, let us know your dates early, so we can plan ahead.

If you are booking for a business, tell us how you’d like to handle the booking and payment, and we’ll explain how it works. We are happy to liaise with facilities on parking and timings.

Should I sort the food myself?

For a small group, making your own food can work. For larger numbers, or when you want hot food, a van takes the pressure off, and you get to enjoy the day.

Some hosts try a takeaway order. Large orders are slow, and the food cools in the bags. A van cooks in front of your guests instead.

How the day works

We arrive on time, pulls onto the spot you’ve chosen. When the fryers are up to heat, service starts right on schedule. Golden-hour photos in The Sands at midsummer come around 9:20pm, so the van can serve before or after your sunset photos. Sunset is around 8:55pm in late May and 7:05pm in late September.

  1. Contact us with the basics: when, where and roughly how many.
  2. Show us where the van would go, and we will confirm it works.
  3. A week or so before, we confirm timings and numbers.
  4. We park, open the hatch and start frying for your guests.
  5. Once the last portion is out, we pack up and go.

Before we arrive

  • Think about a gazebo by the van in case of rain
  • Clear the route for the van
  • Confirm numbers and dietary needs before the day

Looking after everyone

With a little notice, diets are easier to plan for. Our advice:

  • Put bins near the van
  • Confirm the van can park at the venue
  • Add an allergy question to your RSVP card
  • Have a back-up for guests with special diets

Once everyone has eaten, we pack up and leave you to the party.

Think about cover by the hatch for wet evenings.

What a fish and chip van costs

Fish and chip van pricing is simple once we know the basics:

  • How easy the site is to reach
  • The minimum booking
  • The date and time of year
  • Service time

The price depends on numbers, the menu and how long we serve, along with distance and access to the site. We quote for each booking individually.

Getting an accurate quote

You do not need every detail fixed to get a quote, but these help:

  • The spot you have in mind for the van
  • Roughly how many people, including children
  • A picture of where the van would go
  • Anything awkward about the way in

The more you tell us, the more accurate the quote: the parking spot, access, numbers and serving time. Photos of the spot and the way in help. When you are ready, send us your details through our quote form.

Food your guests will love

Gravy

Gravy brings a bit of warmth to the meal, especially in winter.

Sausage and chips

Sausage and chips covers anyone who doesn’t want fish, and it’s a favourite with children.

Common questions in The Sands

Could you trade in Crooksbury Hill?

Only with permission from the park’s owner, usually the council. Ask them first.

Can the van go to venues in the Surrey Hills National Landscape?

Yes. Some venues there have rules about vehicles and ground, so check with yours. We’ll follow the site rules.

What does the van need?

Less than you might think: a drive, a car park, a yard or a firm lawn, that the van can reach easily. If in doubt, send a picture.

Can the van park on grass?

Normally, if it is firm and dry. After heavy rain, soft grass can be a problem for any vehicle, so have a hard-surface back-up.

Can the van come for the evening?

Yes. Evening food is the most common wedding booking for a fish and chip van. Send us your date and venue.

What if we only have street parking?

Only where it is legal to park, or with a council parking suspension or road closure. Ask your council early.

What food do you serve?

Fish and chips, of course, with sausages and pies for anyone who doesn’t want fish. Mushy peas, curry sauce and gravy go on the side.

Can the van be part of the photos?

Lots of couples ask for a photo at the van. If you’d rather not, we’ll park out of shot where possible.

  • Fried fresh to order in the van at your event
  • Cod, haddock and chips, sausages and pies
  • The van comes to you: homes, venues, workplaces and fields
  • Served at the time you choose, from the hatch
