Diets, allergies and planning

We take allergies seriously. Here’s how you can help:

  • Think about a gazebo or covered doorway
  • Plan an alternative for anyone we cannot cater for
  • Ask about your date in the autumn, or earlier
  • Put allergy details in writing

When service is finished, we pack up and leave you to the party.

Some teams collect for a local charity on the day.

Christmas party fish and chips in Roedean, cooked to order

The Christmas season is short and busy, so ask as soon as you know yours. Whether it is festive gatherings after Christmas and depot Christmas treats, we can cook haddock and chips, pie and chips and sausage and chips.

In winter near Roedean, we need firm ground and light, as fields are often soft. Every portion is cooked to order on the day, never cooked in advance and left in a hot cabinet, and served the moment it comes out of the fryer.

Curry sauce

Chip-shop curry sauce is a mild, slightly sweet British classic, great with chips and sausages.

Gravy

A pot of gravy turns chips into comfort food, especially in winter.

Organising for someone else?

Having the party at home? Send a photo of where the van would park, and we will let you know if the van will fit.

Parks, greens and streets normally need permission for a catering van. The council or landowner will tell you what they need.

What happens on the day

We get there well before service, set up and bring the oil up to temperature. Your guests can wander over to the hatch as soon as we open. It gets dark in Roedean by about 3:55pm at Christmas; park the van where there’s good light, and keep the walk short.

  1. Send us your date, numbers and address.
  2. We check access for the van and quote.
  3. We arrive early to park and heat the fryers.
  4. Everything is fried to order as the queue moves.
  5. We serve hot from the hatch and pack up when we are done.

Before we arrive

  • Plan a bit of cover near the hatch if rain is likely
  • Confirm the van is allowed on site
  • Choose a level, firm spot for the van

Common questions in Roedean

Can the van park in Whitehawk Hill?

Only if the landowner, normally the council, allows it. Check with them first, and tell us what they say.

Is Roedean close to London?

Roughly 47 miles from the centre of London, and well within our area.

When should we eat?

Whenever suits your party. Remember it’s dark by about 4pm in December.

Do you need power or water?

Tell us what’s available at the site in your enquiry, and we will say what we need.

Do you cover Roedean?

We do. Roedean is one of the places we cover. Send us your date to check availability.

What about guests who do not eat fish?

We serve sausages and pies as well as fish. Let us know about any other dietary needs and we’ll be honest about what’s possible.

Do you do work Christmas parties?

We do. Send us your date and site details.

When do Christmas bookings fill up?

Ideally in the summer or early autumn, especially for a Friday.

Is a fish and chip van right for your Christmas party?

For a Christmas party that feels a bit different, a fish and chip van is a great choice. Compared with a sit-down meal, a fish and chip van is frequently good value, because it needs no kitchen and no crockery hire. Ask us for a quote.

Why us?

  • Something for guests to gather round
  • Nothing for you to cook or clear
  • Bookings across Brighton and Hove, including Roedean
  • Mushy peas, curry sauce and gravy on the side

Take a look at our prices page and what a fish and chip van costs.

Before you choose a spot

Most drives, car parks, yards and firm lawns can take the van, but a few things matter:

  • A short walk from the party
  • Light near the van and the queue for evening service
  • A clear way in, with no low branches, cables or narrow gates

If in doubt, send us a picture of the spot and we’ll advise.

From the hatch

  • Haddock and chips
  • Sausage and chips
  • Cod and chips
  • Gravy
  • Curry sauce
  • Pie and chips
  • Mushy peas

Cannot we just order from the chip shop?

Some hosts try a takeaway order. Large orders are slow, and the food cools in the bags. A van solves that by cooking on site.

You could do a chip-shop run for everyone yourself, but it rarely works for a crowd. By the time you’ve queued, paid and driven back, the batter has gone soft. A van fries it right there, so it’s crisp.

Christmas parties in Roedean: local tips

Roedean is about 2 miles east of Carlton Hill, in Brighton and Hove. We park up at homes, halls, workplaces and venues in Roedean and nearby villages. Roedean is one of 30 places in Brighton and Hove where we bring the van.

A Christmas fair at St Mark's Church is just the kind of event a chip van suits. A winter fair at a school like St Mark's CofE Primary School gets dark early, so hot food from a van is popular.
