We park in your car park, yard or forecourt, so nobody has to leave site. Typical bookings include summer team days and shift teams at depots and warehouses, serving cod and chips, pie and chips and mushy peas.

Near Downend, workplaces can be far from shops, so a chip van lunch is welcome. We serve from the hatch, so every portion is hot, and service is quick once we’re up and running.

What happens on the day

Expect a friendly, organised set-up. Arrival and serving times are agreed beforehand, park on the agreed spot, and get on with frying and serving. After-work summer events in Downend have daylight until about 9:25pm in late June and 7:10pm in late September; winter events, dark by about 4:00pm, need a lit spot for the van.

  1. Send us the date, site, headcount and break times.
  2. We check the site and send a price and any details facilities need.
  3. Parking and arrival are agreed with your facilities team.
  4. We serve hot from the hatch through your break or shifts.
  5. Afterwards, we pack up and leave the car park tidy.

Before we arrive

Can’t we just order from the chip shop?

Some hosts try a takeaway order. Large orders are slow, and the food cools in the bags. A van cooks in front of your staff instead.

Not sure whether to order in or book a van? Consider your numbers and how fresh you want it. We’re happy to send a quote so you can compare.

Downend for staff days and team lunches

Downend is about 5 miles north of Newbury, in West Berkshire. Wherever your staff event is in the RG20 area, we will come to your venue, home or workplace. We take the van to 155 places in West Berkshire. You can also see our page for Reading, about 15 miles away.

Nearby historic houses include Shaw House (4.2 miles south). For a client event at a historic house, ask early about rules for catering vans. With the North Wessex Downs National Landscape within about 5 miles, rural team days are easy to arrange.

For staff events in RG20, we just need to know where the van can park and a serving time. That could mean a staff event at a home on Downend Lane, Bardown and Northfields or the roads around them, as long as there is somewhere for the van. If your venue is just outside Downend, we also cover Chieveley (1 mile south), North Heath (1 mile south-west), World's End (1 mile north-east), Peasemore (2 miles north-west) and Beedon (2 miles north). Larger places within reach include Newbury (5 miles south), Thatcham (5 miles south-east), Burghfield Common (12 miles south-east), Speenhamland (5 miles south), Hungerford (10 miles south-west) and Calcot (12 miles east).

Nearby you’ll also find Hampstead Norris Castle (3.3 miles east) and West Berkshire Community Hospital (4.7 miles south). Within reach you will find Snelsmore Common.

  • Nearby, you will find The Wheatsheaf pub (0.7 miles south)

How to compare vans

Is a fish and chip van right for your staff event?

Corporate buffets are generally cold. A chip van serves hot food fresh from the fryer. Distance and any road charges make a difference, so tell us exactly where your staff event is.

Why Downend hosts choose us

  • Fish and chips fried fresh on site
  • A menu almost everyone likes
  • Hot food handed straight over
  • A clear quote before you book

What a fish and chip van costs

Fish and chip van pricing is simple once we know the basics:

  • The number of meals
  • Whether a minimum applies
  • How easy the site is to reach
  • The menu and how many choices

Compared with a sit-down meal, a fish and chip van is often good value, as there’s no kitchen to hire and nothing to wash up. Ask us for a quote.

Getting an accurate quote

The more we know about your staff event, the better we can plan. Please include:

  • The date and time of the event
  • Rough numbers for adults and children
  • A picture of where the van would go
  • Where you’d like the van to go

Tell us your date, venue or postcode and roughly how many people, plus when you’d like to eat, and we will reply with a quote. To get started, use our quote form.

The menu, dish by dish

Gravy

Gravy brings a bit of warmth to the meal.

Mushy peas

Mushy peas are made from dried marrowfat peas, soaked and cooked until soft. They’re the classic side with fish and chips.

  • Somewhere close to where people will eat

If in doubt, send us a picture of the spot and we will advise before you book.

Looking after everyone

Good planning keeps every guest safe and happy. Try these:

  • Tell us exactly when each group can eat
  • Let us know about coeliac disease
  • Have a back-up for special diets
  • Consider a pre-order list

Bins and napkins by the van make it easy.

Make it a regular thing: monthly or quarterly.

Downend: your questions answered

Do you come to venues in the North Wessex Downs National Landscape?

Yes, though some venues in protected landscapes have extra rules for vehicles; ask your venue. We’ll work to whatever the site needs.

Do you come out to small places like Downend?

No, we come to small places too. Tell us about lanes, gates and the ground.

What do we need to supply?

Let us know about power and water at the site when you enquire, and we will say what we need.

Can you come onto our site?

That is up to your site, but a car park or yard is usually ideal.

Do you come to Downend?

Yes, we do. We serve events in Downend and across West Berkshire. Tell us your date and we’ll check availability.

Do you fry it on site?

It is. The fryers are in the van, so it is fried on the spot, rather than made in advance.

When do you arrive?

We get there in good time to set up. We’ll agree arrival and serving times with you.

Can you park on the road outside?

That depends on local parking rules. A drive, car park or yard is usually easier; if it has to be the street, check with the council.
