Film set catering for Canada events

The menu, dish by dish

Pie and chips

For a heartier option, there’s pie and chips, perfect with gravy.

Cod and chips

For many people, cod and chips is the definitive version. Cooked fresh at the hatch, it is hot, crisp and generous.

Film set catering in Canada, cooked to order

On a long shoot day, a good hot lunch keeps morale up. We park at the unit base and cook to order. We’re frequently asked to cater music video shoots and stills shoots, serving pie and chips, sausage and chips and cod and chips.

Near Canada, crews may be miles from anywhere to eat, so lunch at base matters. Everything we need comes with the van, and we pack up and leave the spot as we found it.

Fish and chips served hot in a takeaway tray

A chip van compared with other options

Compared with sandwiches on set, a chip van gives the crew a proper hot meal. Compared with a sit-down meal, a fish and chip van is often good value, because it needs no kitchen and no crockery hire. Ask us for a quote.

Why book our van in Canada

  • A menu almost everyone likes
  • A clear quote before booking
  • Fried fresh, not kept warm
  • Something for crew to gather round

Organising for someone else?

Planning an event for a club, school or charity in Canada? Fish and chips is a reliable crowd-pleaser. Tell us about the event and we will take it from there.

If your event is in a public place, such as a park or a street, check what permission you need first. The council or landowner will tell you what they need.

Cannot we just order from the chip shop?

Weighing up a takeaway order against booking a van? Think about numbers, timing and how hot you want the food. Ask us for a quote and compare.

Some hosts try a takeaway order. The problem is timing: big orders take a long time, and the food is cooling while it travels. A van cooks in front of your crew instead.

What happens on the day

Setting up takes a little while, because the oil has to come up to temperature, so we always arrive well ahead of your serving time. Light in Canada lasts until about 9:25pm at midsummer; for dawn calls or late wraps, plan lighting at base.

  1. Send us your date, numbers and address.
  2. We check the route in and send a price.
  3. We arrive early to park and heat the fryers.
  4. Everything is fried to order as the queue moves.
  5. We serve hot from the hatch and pack up when we are done.

Before we arrive

  • Give us your final numbers and allergies
  • Arrange somewhere dry for the queue
  • Make sure the van can get in

Prices and what affects them

Your quote will be clear. What affects it most:

  • How easy the site is to reach
  • Any minimum charge
  • The menu and how many choices
  • The number of meals

Most vans have a minimum charge, because the van, fuel and travel cost the same for a small group. Ask us what applies to your shoot.

What to tell us

You do not need every detail fixed to get a quote, but it helps to know:

  • How to get in: gates, lanes and ground
  • A photo of the parking spot
  • Allergies and diets you know about
  • Your date and serving time

Not sure of numbers yet? That’s fine: tell us the basics about your shoot, and we’ll quote on that. Start when you’re ready: use our quote form.

Diets, allergies and planning

Nearly every event has some special diets. To plan for them:

  • Make sure we can reach locations on the day
  • Plan an alternative for anyone we can’t cater for
  • Agree how the base is left
  • Let us know about coeliac disease

We work to the lunch time on the call sheet, and a contact keeps us updated.

Plan bins at the unit base.

Canada: your questions answered

Do you come to venues in the New Forest National Park?

Yes. Some venues there have rules about vehicles and ground, so check with yours. We’ll work to whatever the site needs.

Which station is closest to Canada?

Romsey station, about 4.6 miles north-east of the centre.

Where do you take the van?

We cover London and the South East, including Hampshire. See all areas.

Do you cover Canada?

Yes, we do. We serve events in Canada and across Hampshire. Tell us your date and we’ll check availability.

Is everything cooked fresh?

Yes. We fry to order in the van at your venue, then handed over hot from the hatch.

How fast is service?

Keeping choices simple and sending people up in groups helps. Tell us your timings and we’ll advise.

Can you cook in the rain?

The weather does not stop the van, because the cooking happens inside. Soft ground after heavy rain is the bigger issue, so have a hard-surface spot in mind.

How much is fish and chip van hire?

It depends on numbers, the menu, how long we serve and travel. Tell us about your shoot and we will send a quote.

Before you choose a spot

We will be honest if a spot won’t work. What matters most:

  • A lit spot for dark mornings or evenings
  • A route in the van can manage, with no low branches or tight lanes
  • Space in front of the hatch

If in doubt, send us a picture of the spot and we’ll advise before booking.
