About our film set catering in New Zealand

Food is fried to order, so lunch is hot and fresh. We serve haddock and chips, mushy peas and sausage and chips, and we’re often booked for crew morale days and outside broadcasts.

For a shoot in a place like New Zealand, tracks and soft ground need checking. Everything we need comes with the van, and we pack up and leave the spot as we found it.

Shooting in New Zealand: unit bases and access

New Zealand is about 1 mile west of Elmhurst, in Buckinghamshire. From the centre of New Zealand to the outskirts, we offer the same service: fresh frying, hot food from the hatch and a clear price. We take the van to all 263 towns and villages in Buckinghamshire. You can also see our page for Milton Keynes, about 15 miles away.

For cast and crew travelling by train, Aylesbury station, about 0.8 miles south, is the nearest station. The Chilterns National Landscape is within about 6 miles of New Zealand, so check vehicle rules with locations.

Wherever your shoot is in HP19 and HP20, we can fry fresh for your crew. That could mean a shoot at a home on Dunsham Lane, Drayton Road and Cannock Road, as long as there is somewhere for the van. Nearby, we also serve shoots in Elmhurst (1 mile east), Aylesbury (1 mile south), Watermead (1 mile north-east), Quarrendon Estate (1 mile west) and California (1 mile south). We also serve nearby towns such as High Wycombe (14 miles south), Chesham (12 miles south-east), Buckingham (14 miles north-west), Amersham (14 miles south-east), Princes Risborough (7 miles south) and Haddenham (6 miles south-west).

Well-known places in the area include Royal Buckinghamshire Hospital (under half a mile south) and Dinton Castle (3.8 miles south-west).

  • Local schools include The PACE Centre (0.6 miles west) and Buckinghamshire UTC (0.8 miles south-west)
  • Local pubs include The New Zealand pub (within half a mile south)

Questions from New Zealand

Can the van go to venues in the Chilterns National Landscape?

Yes. Some venues there have rules about vehicles and ground, so check with yours. We’ll follow the site rules.

What’s the nearest station to New Zealand?

Aylesbury station, about 0.8 miles south of the centre.

Do you have a kids’ option?

Yes, children are easy to cater for. Tell us how many children, and we will include them in the plan.

How long will the queue be?

Keeping choices simple and sending people up in groups helps. We’ll talk it through when we quote.

Do you come to New Zealand?

Yes. We take the van across London and the South East, including New Zealand. To check your date, use our quote form.

What do you bring?

All the cooking happens in the van. Let us know what’s available at the site and we will confirm what we need.

Do you have allergen information?

We provide allergen information for everything we serve. Battered fish contains fish and, in standard batter, gluten. Send us any allergies in writing.

What about crew who don’t eat fish?

Yes: sausages and pies, with chips. Give us a rough idea of numbers.

The process

We don’t cook ahead. Fish is battered and fried when people come up to the hatch, which is why it tastes like it does at the seaside. At midsummer, New Zealand has light until about 9:25pm.

  1. It starts with the unit base, dates and numbers.
  2. We check access and send a quote.
  3. Parking and arrival are agreed with locations.
  4. We serve hot from the hatch when lunch is called.
  5. We pack up straight after service and leave the base tidy.

Before we arrive

  • Choose a level, firm spot for the van
  • Confirm the van is allowed on site
  • Let us know the serving time

Planning help

Planning the van’s spot

If a spot is not suitable, we’ll tell you, and help find another. What matters most:

  • Far enough from set to keep noise down
  • A hardstanding spot at the unit base
  • Permission for the van at base

If you are unsure, send a photo of the space and the way in, and we will say what we think before you book.

What we serve

  • Sausage and chips
  • Cod and chips
  • Haddock and chips
  • Crew lunches
  • Mushy peas
  • Pie and chips

For planners, venues and organisers

Planning an event for a club, school or charity in New Zealand? Fish and chips is a reliable crowd-pleaser. Tell us about the event and we will take it from there.

Venues frequently have their own rules about outside caterers and vehicles: parking spots, arrival times and documents. Send us your venue’s requirements and we’ll work through them with you.

Why fried-to-order beats a buffet

Long shoots typically need a full catering unit. A van is great for short jobs and crew treats. Comparing vans? Look at what each quote includes: service time, menu, travel, any minimum and VAT. We set ours out clearly.

Why us?

  • The classic sides: peas, curry sauce and gravy
  • A menu almost everyone likes
  • The queue at the hatch gets people talking
  • Nothing for you to cook or clear

DIY versus a fish and chip van

DIY food keeps costs down, but the host spends the event serving. With a fish and chip van, you get hot food without the work.

For a small group, making your own food can work. For larger numbers, or when you want hot food, a van takes the pressure off, and you get to enjoy the day.

How we price a fish and chip van for the crew

Every booking is priced individually, and the price depends on a few things:

  • The menu and how many choices
  • How far we travel
  • Service time
  • Whether a minimum applies

Larger groups usually cost less per head, since the van and set-up are much the same for any size. Tell us your numbers for an accurate price.

What to tell us

To check availability and price, we need:

  • A picture of where the van would go
  • Allergies and diets you know about
  • Roughly how many people, including children
  • Where the van would park

We quote for each event separately, so the price fits what you actually need. For a quote, fill in our quote form.

Cod and chips

For many people, cod and chips is the definitive version. Cooked fresh at the hatch, it’s hot, crisp and generous.

Haddock and chips

Haddock is a little sweeter than cod, with a finer, firmer flake. It is the traditional favourite in Scotland and much of the north.

  • Fried fresh to order in the van at your event
  • Cod, haddock and chips, sausages and pies
  • The van comes to you: homes, venues, workplaces and fields
  • Served at the time you choose, from the hatch
