Send questions

Do you come to venues in the Surrey Hills National Landscape?

Yes, though some venues in protected landscapes have extra rules for vehicles; ask your venue. We will follow the site rules.

How far is Send from London?

Roughly 24 miles from the centre of London.

What do we need to supply?

A suitable spot for the van and permission to park there. Mention any power or water available and we’ll confirm the rest.

When do you arrive?

It depends on numbers and the service time. We confirm all the timings beforehand.

Do numbers include extras?

Yes, include them in numbers. Confirm numbers the day before.

Can the van park on grass?

That depends on the weather and the ground. Tell us about it when you enquire, and send a picture if you can.

What does the van need?

Level, firm ground the van can reach, near your crew, and space for a queue. Mention any narrow gates or soft ground.

Can you park on the road outside?

Only in a legal space, or with the council’s permission. Ask your council early.

How our film set catering works in Send

Schedules move, so a contact on the day helps and we will work around it. For lunch at the unit base and event crews, we can cook cod and chips, mushy peas and pie and chips for your guests.

Shoots around Send often use houses, farms and lanes. Let us know about access. Food is served straight from the hatch, so every portion is hot, and the queue keeps moving.

The process

The smell of the fryers does the inviting. Fish goes into the batter and straight into the fryer, with chips cooked in batches as the queue moves. Sunset in Send is about 8:55pm in late May, 9:20pm at midsummer and 7:05pm in late September; for early or late service, base needs lighting.

  1. Send us your date, numbers and address.
  2. We check the route in and send a price.
  3. We arrive in good time to set up.
  4. Everything is fried to order as the queue moves.
  5. We serve hot from the hatch and pack up when we are done.

Getting ready for the day

Gravy

Chips and gravy is a favourite in the north and the Midlands, and it goes perfectly with a pie.

Pie and chips

For a heartier option, there is pie and chips, perfect with gravy.

Allergies and dietary needs

We need to know about dietary needs and allergies in advance, and we’ll be straight with you about what’s possible. To make it work smoothly:

  • Give us a contact for call-time changes
  • Send allergies to us in writing
  • Confirm numbers the day before
  • Collect diets and allergies with crew details

Fewer choices mean faster service.

A chip van wrap party is a great way to finish a shoot.

What a fish and chip van costs

There is nothing hidden: the quote reflects:

  • The menu and how many choices
  • How long we serve
  • Whether a minimum applies
  • The date and time of year

Travel, tolls and charges such as ULEZ can affect the price, so tell us exactly where your shoot is.

What to tell us

To check availability and price, we need:

  • The venue or postcode
  • Roughly how many people, including children
  • Your date and serving time
  • Any dietary needs and allergies

Every booking is quoted individually, so the price fits what you actually need. For a quote, fill in our quote form.

Our booking checklist

DIY versus a fish and chip van

You could do a chip-shop run for everyone yourself, but it rarely works for a crowd. By the time you’ve queued, paid and driven back, the batter has gone soft. A van fries it right there, so it is crisp.

If you do order from a chip shop, ring well ahead and collect as close to eating time as you can. For a crowd, a van is generally simpler.

Planners, venues and businesses

Many venues set rules for catering vans: parking spots, arrival times and documents. Tell us what your venue needs and we will work through them with you.

Organising a club, school or community event in Send? A fish and chip van draws people in and almost everyone likes it. Tell us about the event and we’ll take it from there.

Space, access and the venue

Most drives, car parks, yards and firm lawns can take the van, but a few things matter:

  • A clear route to base
  • Away from the shooting area’s sound
  • Room for the crew to queue

If you are unsure, send a picture of the space and the way in, and we’ll say what we think.

From the hatch

  • Cod and chips
  • Pie and chips
  • Sausage and chips
  • Mushy peas
  • Crew lunches
  • Haddock and chips
