About our film set catering in Shaw

Food is fried to order, so it’s hot when the break is called. We’re often asked to cater seaside and period locations and outside broadcasts, with mushy peas, pie and chips and sausage and chips.

Shoots around Shaw often use houses, farms and lanes. Tell us about the route to base. Every portion is cooked to order on the day, not cooked earlier and kept warm, and handed over as soon as it is ready.

Space, access and the venue

We will agree the van’s spot with you before the day. It needs to tick a few simple boxes:

  • A level, firm spot at the unit base
  • Light near the van if needed
  • A route in the van can manage, with no low branches or tight lanes

If in doubt, send us a picture of the spot and we will advise before you book.

What we serve

How it works

Nothing gathers a crowd like the smell of fish and chips. Fish goes into the batter and straight into the fryer, and chips are fried in batches through service. In December, daylight in Shaw ends around 4:00pm, so a late lunch or wrap at base needs lighting. In summer, light lasts until about 9:25pm.

  1. First, tell us about your shoot.
  2. You get an availability check and a clear quote.
  3. We agree timings, access and the parking spot.
  4. On the day, we park up and fry fresh for the crew.
  5. We serve from the hatch, then leave the pitch tidy.

How we price a fish and chip van for the crew

Two events with the same numbers can cost different amounts, because of:

  • The date and time of year
  • Whether a minimum applies
  • Service time
  • How easy the site is to reach

There is no one-size-fits-all price for a fish and chip van. A short service and a long afternoon’s trading are very different bookings. We set everything out in your quote.

Getting an accurate quote

To check availability and price, we need:

  • Rough numbers for adults and children
  • Where the van would park
  • Any dietary needs and allergies
  • A photo of the parking spot

Still finalising the details? No problem: give us a rough idea and the date, and we will quote on that. Start when you are ready: fill in our quote form.

Takeaway run or book a van?

For a small group, making your own food can work. For larger numbers, or when you want hot food, a van takes the pressure off, and nobody has to miss the shoot.

Ordering in from a local chip shop is an option. The problem is timing: big orders take a long time, and the food is cooling while it travels. A van cooks in front of your crew instead.

Diets, allergies and planning

We need to know about dietary needs and allergies in advance, and we will tell you honestly what we can offer. To make it work smoothly:

  • Collect diets and allergies with crew details
  • Tell us about coeliac crew specifically
  • Ensure we can reach locations on the day
  • Update numbers if they change

We work to the lunch time on the call sheet, with a contact for changes.

Bins at base keep the location clean.

Events we cater in Shaw

It lifts the crew on a tough day.

Big or small, the van works the same way. Common bookings include:

  • Crew treats on long shoot days
  • Photo shoots
  • Live events and broadcasts
  • Period dramas on location

Nearby historic houses include Shaw House (within half a mile north-west) and Benham Park (2.4 miles west). Period locations like these normally keep vehicles well away from the house, so agree the base early.

15 questions to ask before booking

The menu, dish by dish

Cod and chips

Cod is the classic: mild, white and flaky, and it is what most people in the south ask for. We batter it and fry it to order.

Mushy peas

Mushy peas are made from dried marrowfat peas, soaked and cooked until soft. They’re the classic side with fish and chips.

For planners, venues and organisers

For big groups, the service window matters, so we can plan how to keep the queue short. Staggering groups helps a lot.

If your event is in a public place, such as a park or a street, check what permission you need first. The council or landowner will tell you what they need.

Shaw questions

Can the van park in Victoria Park?

Only with permission from the park’s owner, usually the council. Ask them first, and tell us what they say.

What’s the nearest station to Shaw?

The closest is Newbury Racecourse station, roughly 0.8 miles away.

Do we need to provide anything?

Somewhere suitable to park, with permission. Tell us whether there’s power or water nearby and we’ll take it from there.

Can you feed supporting artists too?

Of course. Just tell us who counts.

How long are you on site?

We get there in good time to set up. Timings are agreed in advance so food is ready when you want it.

What does the van need?

Not much: a hard surface or firm, dry grass, with a clear way in. If in doubt, send a picture.

What paperwork do you provide?

Productions vary, so send us the list and we will go through it.

How fast is service?

It depends on numbers, the menu and how people arrive. Tell us your numbers and how long you have for food, and we will plan to keep the queue moving.
