Planning the van’s spot

Every site is different, so we’ll ask about yours when you get in touch. Generally, we look for:

  • A wet-weather pitch on hard standing
  • Confirmation the van can trade there
  • Room in front of the hatch for a queue that does not block walkways

Not sure about the spot? Send us a photo and we will tell you honestly.

Fish and chip van for events for your event in East Street

A hot-food van gives families a reason to stay longer, which is good for every other stall. For village fêtes and sports days, we can cook curry sauce, mushy peas and sausage and chips and more.

At a field event near East Street, power and water may be limited; tell us what’s available and we will plan around it. Tell us about dietary needs and allergies when you enquire, and we’ll be straight with you about what we can do before you book.

Step by step

The first sign we have arrived is normally the smell. From then on, people come up as they’re ready. December events in East Street lose the light at about 3:50pm, so we need a lit pitch; in late May there is light until about 8:45pm.

  1. Send us your date, numbers and address.
  2. We check the route in and send a price.
  3. We arrive early to park and heat the fryers.
  4. Fish goes into the batter and straight into the fryer, to order.
  5. We serve hot from the hatch and pack up when we’re done.

A chip van compared with other options

Cold food stalls are fine on a hot day, but hot food is a draw when it’s cool. Comparing vans? Look at what each quote includes: service time, menu, travel, any minimum and VAT. We set ours out clearly.

What you get with us

  • Works on wet days as well as sunny ones
  • No kitchen needed
  • Something for visitors to gather round
  • A menu almost everyone likes

Take a look at our pricing or the cost guide.

Organising for someone else?

If you run the same event each year, tell us your dates early, so we can hold the date.

Venues frequently have their own rules about outside caterers and vehicles: where a van can park, access times and the paperwork they want. Send us your venue’s requirements and we’ll confirm what we can provide.

Cannot we just order from the chip shop?

Collecting fish and chips for a crowd yourself is possible, but it’s hard work. Long waits and a drive home mean food arrives lukewarm and soggy. A van fries it right there, so it’s crisp.

Not sure whether to order in or book a van? Consider your numbers and how fresh you want it. We are happy to send a quote so you can compare.

About the food

Haddock and chips

Haddock has a slightly sweeter flavour and a firmer flake. In the north and in Scotland, haddock is the classic.

Pie and chips

Pie and chips is hearty and filling, and it is a favourite in colder months.

Looking after everyone

A little planning helps everyone eat safely. A few tips:

  • Share last year’s numbers if you have them
  • Arrange bins and waste collection
  • Agree the terms in writing
  • Set a time for helpers’ food

Mark out the queue area away from walkways, especially near rides and games.

Pre-selling meal tickets helps us plan.

Our booking checklist

East Street: your questions answered

Do you trade at school fairs around East Street?

Yes, with the school’s permission. Tell us the date and pitch details.

Can you serve near the sea around East Street?

Yes, of course. The cooking is inside the van, so wind doesn’t affect it, but the queue will want shelter.

Can the van come to our fair?

Yes, where the date suits. Contact us with the details.

Can the van park on grass?

That depends on the weather and the ground. Let us know what the ground is like, and send a photo if you can.

Do we need to provide anything?

A suitable spot for the van and permission to park there. Tell us whether there is power or water nearby and we will confirm the rest.

Can you feed our volunteers and crew?

Yes. Give us numbers and a time.

How big a pitch do you need?

Send us the pitch details, and we’ll confirm.

Where can the van park?

Not much: a drive, a car park, a yard or a firm lawn, with a clear way in. Send us a photo if you are not sure.
