What comes out of the fryer

Pie and chips

Pie and chips gives people a filling alternative to fish, perfect with gravy.

Gravy

Gravy brings a bit of warmth to the meal, especially in winter.

Diets, allergies and planning

We need to know about dietary needs and allergies in advance, and we will be straight with you about what’s possible. To get it right:

  • Give us an idea of numbers
  • Share pitch details
  • Settle the pitch terms early
  • Display allergens for each stall

Have a hard-standing back-up pitch in case the ground is soft.

Put the van near the entrance or the tea tent.

For planners, venues and organisers

If you run the same event each year, tell us your dates early, so we can hold the date.

Planners and coordinators can contact us directly, and we will keep you updated on arrival and serving times.

DIY versus a fish and chip van

Ordering from a local shop? Call ahead and collect at the last minute. For a crowd, a van is normally simpler.

Some hosts try a takeaway order. The problem is timing: big orders take a long time, and the food is cooling while it travels. A van cooks in front of your visitors instead.

How the day works

Service is quick: everything is handed over hot from the hatch, and people can eat where they like. When service is finished, we pack up and leave the pitch tidy. At midsummer, events in Shere stay light until about 9:20pm, so evening trading generally finishes in daylight in high summer. Winter fairs, dark by about 3:55pm, need a well-lit pitch.

  1. Organisers send us the event, the dates and the pitch details.
  2. You get our pitch needs and a quick answer on availability.
  3. On the day, we arrive and set up our pitch.
  4. We trade from the hatch all event, frying to order.
  5. At the end, we pack up and leave the pitch tidy.

Getting ready for the day

  • Check the venue or landowner is happy for the van to park
  • Let us know the serving time
  • Check the way in for low branches, cables and narrow gates

Shere events: pitches and permissions

Shere is about 5 miles east of Guildford, in Surrey. Events in Shere are planned around your venue and timings: a clear quote, an agreed spot for the van and food fried fresh on the day. We take the van to all 395 towns and villages across Surrey.

An event in Colekitchen Down means agreeing traders and vehicle routes with the landowner, usually the council. For a church fête or fundraiser, at a church such as The Church of St James, a chip van adds hot food to the cakes and tombola. Events in and around the Surrey Hills National Landscape, within about a mile of Shere, frequently have rules about vehicles, ground and waste; we will follow the site’s requirements.

We cover events in every part of the GU5 postcode area. Streets in the area include Lower Street, Orchard Road and Shere Lane, and the van can serve an event on any of them with a suitable parking spot. If your venue is just outside Shere, we also cover Gomshall (1 mile east), Albury Heath (1 mile south-west), Little London (1 mile south-west), Albury (1 mile west) and Abinger Hammer (1 mile east). Within a short drive, we also cover Guildford (5 miles west), Woking (8 miles north-west), Camberley (14 miles north-west), Epsom (12 miles north-east), Horley (13 miles east) and Redhill (13 miles east).

A little further out are Shere Museum (less than half a mile east) and Abinger Castle (2.8 miles south-east). Within reach you will find Silent Pool and St Martha's Hill.

  • Nearby, you’ll find The White Horse Public House (within half a mile south-east)

How we price a fish and chip van for your event

Your quote will be clear. What affects it most:

  • Your choice of menu
  • Distance and any road charges
  • Whether a minimum applies
  • The number of meals

There’s no one-size-fits-all price for a fish and chip van. A one-hour staff lunch is a different job from serving all afternoon at a fête. We set everything out in your quote.

Getting an accurate quote

Good planning starts with a few facts. Try to include:

  • Your date and serving time
  • How to get in: gates, lanes and ground
  • A photo of the parking spot
  • Any dietary needs and allergies

We quote for each event separately, based on your numbers, timings and travel. To ask for one, fill in our quote form.

Shere: your questions answered

Is Shere too small for a chip van?

Not at all. We serve villages and hamlets as well as towns. Tell us about lanes, gates and the ground.

Can the van park in Colekitchen Down?

Only with permission from the park’s owner, generally the council. Check with them first, and tell us what they say.

Do you take everything away?

We pack up and leave the pitch tidy when service is finished. Let us know about bins for visitors.

Can you cater for helpers?

Yes, alongside public trading or on its own.

How do you charge at fêtes?

We will talk it through when you send the details, and we’ll find something that works.

What does the pitch need?

A firm pitch with space for a queue. Tell us about power and water.

Which areas do you serve?

London and South East England: Kent, Surrey, East and West Sussex, Hampshire, Berkshire, Bucks, Oxfordshire and the Isle of Wight, including Shere.

Do you need power or water?

Somewhere suitable to park, with permission. Mention any power or water available and we will take it from there.
