How the day works

Serving is straightforward: everything is handed over hot from the hatch. When service is finished, we pack up and leave the pitch tidy. Around midsummer it stays light in Ballinger Common until about 9:25pm; by late September sunset is nearer 7:05pm, so summer evening events are usually served in daylight. For winter events, when it’s dark by about 3:55pm, the van and the queue need lighting.

  1. Send us your date, numbers and address.
  2. We check the route in and send a price.
  3. We arrive early to park and heat the fryers.
  4. Fish goes into the batter and straight into the fryer, to order.
  5. Service is straight from the hatch, then we pack up.

Ballinger Common questions

We’re gathering after a service at St Mary's: can you come?

Yes, at a home, hall or venue nearby where the van can park. Food is usually served at the reception venue rather than the church. Tell us where you will gather.

Can the van go to venues in the Chilterns National Landscape?

Yes, though some venues in protected landscapes have extra rules for vehicles; ask your venue. We will follow the site rules.

What happens when we hire the van?

We arrive with the van, cook fresh on site, and serve when you are ready to eat.

How much does a fish and chip van cost in Ballinger Common?

It depends on numbers, the menu, how long we serve and travel. Send us the details for a quote.

Where can the van park?

Level, firm ground the van can reach, near your guests, with room for a queue at the hatch. Tell us about gates, lanes and soft ground.

Do you do anything other than fish?

We serve sausages and pies as well as fish. Let us know about any other dietary needs and we will be honest about what’s possible.

Can the van park on grass?

Often, if the ground is firm and dry. Soft, wet ground can trap any vehicle, so have a hard-surface back-up.

Can you cook in the rain?

Rain doesn’t stop the fryers: the cooking is inside the van. It is worth planning some cover for the queue.

Is a fish and chip van right for your event?

A plated meal needs a kitchen, more staff and typically costs more per head. A van needs only a level spot and permission to park, and the food is cooked to order. If you have a budget in mind, tell us, and we will suggest a menu and timing to match. Keeping the menu short is normally the best value.

Why us?

  • Fish and chips fried fresh on site
  • No kitchen needed
  • A van that becomes part of the event
  • We cover Ballinger Common and the whole of Buckinghamshire

See our prices page and the cost guide.

Looking after everyone

Allergies are taken seriously. Here’s how you can help:

  • Let us know numbers for vegetarians and vegans
  • Collect allergies with your RSVPs
  • Tell us how many children are coming
  • Arrange an alternative for anyone we can’t cater for

Fish and chips is best eaten right away, so we fry to order as the queue moves.

A string of bunting by the van makes a lovely photo.

For planners, venues and organisers

For larger numbers, tell us how long you have for food, so we can plan service to match. Sending people up in groups helps.

If you are booking for a business, tell us how you’d like to handle the booking and payment, and we will talk you through the process. We can work with your facilities team on access and timings.

Cannot we just order from the chip shop?

DIY food keeps costs down, but the host spends the event serving. Booking the van means hot food and no stress.

Some hosts try a takeaway order. Large orders are slow, and the food cools in the bags. A van cooks in front of your guests instead.

Food your guests will love

Mushy peas

No fish and chips is complete without mushy peas for many people, and they’re on the menu.

Cod and chips

Cod has big, soft white flakes and a mild flavour, and it’s the favourite in much of the south. We batter it and fry it to order, so it is crisp when it reaches you.

  • Fried fresh to order in the van at your event
  • Cod, haddock and chips, sausages and pies
  • The van comes to you: homes, venues, workplaces and fields
  • Served at the time you choose, from the hatch
