How we price a fish and chip van

Every booking is priced individually, and the price depends on a few things:

  • The date and time of year
  • How far we travel
  • Access and parking
  • Any minimum charge

Dates make a difference: peak summer weekends and Christmas party Fridays book up first. Ask about your date early.

Details that help

To speed things up, tell us:

  • Where the van would park
  • Your date and serving time
  • A picture of where the van would go
  • The venue or postcode

Not sure of numbers yet? That is fine: give us a rough idea and the date, and we’ll firm it up nearer the time. To start, fill in our quote form.

Takeaway run or book a van?

Doing the food yourself saves money, but the host ends up running around. Booking the van means hot food and no stress.

Collecting fish and chips for a crowd yourself is possible, but it’s hard work. Long waits and a drive home mean food arrives lukewarm and soggy. With a van, it is fried on the spot.

A chip van compared with other options

A cold buffet is simple, but food sits out, and nothing’s hot on a cool evening. Fish and chips is fried to order and served hot. Compared with a sit-down meal, a fish and chip van is often good value, because it needs no kitchen and no crockery hire. We will send you a quote.

Why Freshwater hosts choose us

  • Hot food handed straight over
  • No kitchen, no crockery, no washing up
  • Events in Freshwater and across the Isle of Wight
  • No surprises in your quote

15 questions to ask before you book

For planners, venues and organisers

Parks, greens and streets normally need permission for a catering van. Ask the council or landowner early.

For repeat bookings, such as regular staff lunches or annual fairs, let us know your dates early, so we can plan ahead.

Freshwater questions

What about events near the coast?

Yes. Wind does not affect the fryers, but plan a sheltered spot for the queue.

We’re gathering after a service at All Saints' Church: can you come?

Yes, at a home, hall or venue nearby where the van can park. Food is usually served at the reception venue rather than the church. Send us the address.

Is a chip van good for a large crowd?

It depends on numbers and timings. A short menu and staggered groups keep things moving.

Do you take everything away?

We pack up and leave the pitch tidy when service is finished. Let us know about bins for guests.

Can we choose cod or haddock?

Both are on our menu; tell us which you’d like for your event.

Can coeliacs eat the battered fish?

No, not as standard: the batter contains wheat. Tell us about any coeliac guests and we will explain the options.

Do we need to provide equipment?

All the cooking happens in the van. Let us know what’s available at the site.

What if the weather’s bad?

We carry on in the rain, because the cooking happens inside. Very soft ground can be a problem, so plan a back-up spot on a hard surface.

About the food

Haddock and chips

Some people swear by haddock: a firmer flake and a sweeter taste. Tell us if you’d like to offer it.

Cod and chips

Cod has big, soft white flakes and a mild flavour, and it’s the favourite in much of the south. It is battered and fried to order.

Step by step

Setting up takes a little while, because the oil has to come up to temperature, so we are there in good time before you want to eat. Late September evenings in Freshwater lose the light at about 7:10pm, and at Christmas it comes at about 4:05pm. After dark, a lit path to the van makes a difference.

  1. Send us your date, numbers and address.
  2. We check the route in and send a price.
  3. We arrive in good time to set up.
  4. Fish goes into the batter and straight into the fryer, to order.
  5. Service is straight from the hatch, then we pack up.

Preparing for the day

  • Check the way in for low branches, cables and narrow gates
  • Tell us when you want to eat
  • Name one person we can call on the day
