The menu is short and classic: cod, haddock, chips, sausages and pies, with mushy peas, curry sauce and gravy. Fewer choices means fresher food and shorter waits. We are often asked to cater fish and chip days at care homes and wakes and gatherings after a funeral, with sausage and chips, mushy peas and cod and chips.

Somewhere like Knotty Green, a yard or firm field frequently works. Gates, verges and soft ground are worth mentioning when you enquire. Food is served straight from the hatch, so every portion is hot, and service is quick once we are up and running.

The process

The van turns up at the agreed time, parks where we agreed and the hatch goes up. Once the oil is hot, the first portions go out right on schedule. Evenings in Knotty Green stay light until about 9:25pm in June, but by late September sunset is around 7:05pm; once it is dark, we need light by the hatch and the queue.

  1. First, tell us about your event.
  2. You get an availability check and a clear quote.
  3. Timings and the van’s spot are agreed in advance.
  4. On the day, we park up and fry fresh for your guests.
  5. Everything goes out hot from the hatch, and we pack up afterwards.

Cold buffets are easy but forgettable, and there is nothing warming on a chilly day. Fish and chips is fried to order and served hot. Many fish and chip vans set a minimum, because the van, fuel and travel cost the same for a small group. We will tell you up front.

Knotty Green questions

We’re gathering after a service at Church of St Michael and All Angels: can you come?

Yes, at a nearby hall, home or venue with somewhere for the van. Churches rarely have space for a catering van, so the food is usually elsewhere. Send us the address.

Can the van go to venues in the Chilterns National Landscape?

Yes, though some venues in protected landscapes have extra rules for vehicles; ask your venue. We will work to whatever the site needs.

Do we need to provide anything?

Let us know about power and water at the site in your enquiry, and we will confirm what we need.

What food do you serve?

Chip-shop favourites: cod or haddock and chips, sausages and pies, with mushy peas, curry sauce and gravy. See the menu.

What does it cost to hire the van?

Every booking is quoted individually, so the price fits what you need. Tell us your date and rough numbers for a clear quote.

What happens if it rains?

We cook inside the van, so rain does not stop us. Guests will appreciate cover near the hatch.

Does the batter contain gluten?

No, not as standard: the batter contains wheat. Let us know and we will tell you what we can do.

How much space do you need?

Less than you might think: a drive, a car park, a yard or a firm lawn, that the van can reach easily. If in doubt, send a picture.

Why choose fish and chip van hire in Knotty Green?

It needs no kitchen, so it works on drives, car parks and showgrounds where plated meals are hard.

What a fish and chip van costs

Your quote will be clear. What affects it most:

  • The day of the week
  • The minimum booking
  • Service time
  • Parking and the way in

The cost per head usually falls as numbers rise, because the van, travel and set-up cost much the same either way. Give us your numbers and we’ll quote.

What to tell us

You do not need everything decided to ask for a quote, but these help:

  • How to get in: gates, lanes and ground
  • Rough numbers for adults and children
  • The date and time of the event
  • A picture of the space and the way in

The more you tell us, the more accurate the quote: where the van would park, how to get in, numbers and timings. A photo of the spot helps too. When you are ready, send us your details through our quote form.

  • Fried fresh to order in the van at your event
  • Cod, haddock and chips, sausages and pies
  • The van comes to you: homes, venues, workplaces and fields
  • Served at the time you choose, from the hatch
