We serve wakes at homes, halls, clubs and venues, wherever the van can park. Popular choices include sausage and chips, cod and chips and gravy, and typical bookings are for a wake at the family home and scattering of ashes gatherings.

In Hollingdean, the hall is often where people gather. We serve from the hatch, so it is hot and generous, and service is quick once we are up and running.

Food your guests will love

Pie and chips

For a heartier option, there is pie and chips, perfect with gravy.

Haddock and chips

Haddock is a little sweeter than cod, with a finer, firmer flake. It is the traditional favourite in Scotland and much of the north.

Should I sort the food myself?

Not sure whether to order in or book a van? Consider your numbers and how fresh you want it. Ask us for a quote and compare.

You could do a chip-shop run for everyone yourself, but it rarely works for a crowd. By the time you’ve queued, paid and driven back, the batter has gone soft. A van fries it right there, so it is crisp.

The process

There is very little for you to do on the day: point us to the spot and get on with your wake. We handle the cooking and serving. In Hollingdean, it is dark by about 7:05pm in late September and 3:55pm in December, so a lit path to the van is a kindness to older guests.

  1. First, the plan: what, where and what time.
  2. We come back with availability and a clear price.
  3. The van’s spot is fixed in advance.
  4. Batter, fish and chips all go into the fryer as people come up.
  5. We leave the spot as we found it.

Preparing for the day

  • Confirm the van is allowed on site
  • Send us final numbers and any allergies in good time

FAQs for Hollingdean

Can the van park in William Clarke Park?

Only if the landowner, normally the council, allows it. Check with them first, and tell us what they say.

Can you serve near the sea around Hollingdean?

Yes, of course. Wind does not affect the fryers, but plan a sheltered spot for the queue.

What if the service runs late?

We allow for it. We will agree a serving time and stay flexible.

Do you do anything other than fish?

We serve sausages and pies as well as fish. Let us know about any other dietary needs and we will be honest about what’s possible.

Is the fish gluten-free?

No, not as standard: batter is generally made with wheat flour. Let us know and we’ll tell you what we can do.

Can you cook in the rain?

We cook inside the van, so rain doesn’t stop us. Guests will appreciate cover near the hatch.

What if we do not know numbers?

It is hard to know, so a rough number is fine. Your funeral director can help.

How do you handle allergies?

We provide allergen information for everything we serve. Fish and gluten are the main ones in battered fish. Tell us about allergies in advance.

How we price fish and chips for the wake

Each booking is quoted on its own, based on a few main things:

  • How long we serve
  • The date and time of year
  • How easy the site is to reach
  • The minimum booking

Got a budget? Let us know, and we will suggest a menu and timing to match. Keeping the menu short is generally the best value.
