Funeral and wake catering in Rock, fried fresh

Wakes are rarely planned months ahead, so get in touch as soon as you can. We serve mushy peas, pie and chips and haddock and chips, and we’re regularly asked to cater family meals after the service and anniversary memorials.

In a small place like Rock, a wake might be at home, in a barn or at the village hall. Let us know about access. Your quote spells out what’s included: the date, the service time and the menu.

DIY versus a fish and chip van

Collecting fish and chips for a crowd yourself is possible, but it is hard work. By the time you’ve queued, paid and driven back, the batter has gone soft. With a van, it is fried on the spot.

Ordering in from a local chip shop is an option. Large orders are slow, and the food cools in the bags. A van solves that by cooking on site.

About the food

Mushy peas

No fish and chips is complete without mushy peas for many people.

Pie and chips

For a heartier option, there’s pie and chips, perfect with gravy.

How we price fish and chips for the wake

The same numbers can mean different prices, because of:

  • Access and parking
  • Whether a minimum applies
  • The menu and how many choices
  • The number of meals

Most vans have a minimum charge, because the van, fuel and travel cost the same for a small group. We’ll tell you up front.

What we need to know

Here’s what makes a quick, accurate quote possible:

  • The date and time of the event
  • Anything awkward about the way in
  • Expected numbers
  • Any dietary needs and allergies

Tell us your date, venue or postcode and roughly how many people, plus when you’d like to eat, and we will reply with a quote. Just use our quote form.

Rock: your questions answered

Do you come to venues in the South Downs National Park?

Yes, though some venues in protected landscapes have extra rules for vehicles; ask your venue. We will work to whatever the site needs.

Is Rock too small for a chip van?

Not at all. We serve villages and hamlets as well as towns. Let us know about access and parking.

Can you cater for allergies?

Yes, we can tell you which allergens are in each item. Battered fish contains fish and, in standard batter, gluten. Tell us about allergies in advance.

Can the wake be at home?

Yes, if there is somewhere level and firm to park the van close to the house.

What’s on the menu?

The classics: cod or haddock and chips, sausages and pies, plus mushy peas, curry sauce and gravy. Our menu has the details.

What if we only have street parking?

That depends on local parking rules. Off-road parking is typically simpler; if it has to be the street, check with the council.

When do you arrive?

It depends on numbers and the service time. We confirm all the timings beforehand.

What areas do you cover?

We cover London and the South East, West Sussex included. Find your area.

Wakes in Rock: venues and practical details

Rock is about 6 miles north of Worthing, in West Sussex. From the centre of Rock to the outskirts, we offer the same service: fish and chips fried to order, served hot and quoted clearly. Rock is one of 371 places in West Sussex where we bring the van. Our nearest city page is Brighton, about 13 miles away.

Rock is within about 6 miles of the South Downs National Park, and rural venues there may have narrow lanes, so tell us about access.

Allergies and dietary needs

Good planning keeps every guest safe and happy. Try these:

  • Build in time for delays
  • Cater for a few more than you expect
  • Confirm the van can park at the hall
  • Arrange tea and coffee separately

Remember the journey from the service when choosing a serving time.

Somewhere quiet to sit helps some guests.

Why fried-to-order beats a buffet

Many wakes have sandwiches and cake. A hot meal can be more comforting, especially in winter. A chip van frequently compares well with a plated meal, as there’s no kitchen to hire and nothing to wash up. We’ll send you a quote.

Why book with us

  • Fish and chips fried fresh on site
  • We cover Rock and the whole of West Sussex
  • All the chip-shop extras

Planning the van’s spot

Plenty of places work for the van, but there are a few things to check:

  • Confirmation that the van can park there
  • Room in front of the hatch for a queue
  • Somewhere close to where people will eat

Not sure about the spot? Send us a picture and we will tell you honestly.

The process

On the day, we position the van, set up the hatch and get the fryers up to temperature. Once we are hot, we cook to order, timed around your wake. Sunset in Rock is about 7:05pm in late September and about 3:55pm in December; make sure older guests have a well-lit route to the van.

  1. First, the plan: what, where and what time.
  2. You hear back on the date and the price.
  3. The van’s spot is fixed in advance.
  4. On the day, everything is cooked to order, so nothing sits in a hot cabinet.
  5. The pitch is left tidy when we go.

Getting ready for the day

  • Check the way in for low branches, cables and narrow gates
  • Name one person we can call on the day
  • Give us your final numbers and allergies

Ask for a quote

The more you tell us, the more accurate the quote: the parking spot, access, numbers and serving time. A photo of the spot helps too. When you’re ready, fill in our quote form.

For planners, venues and organisers

Many venues set rules for catering vans: where a van can park, access times and the paperwork they want. Send us your venue’s requirements and we will work through them with you.

Parks, greens and streets typically need permission for a catering van. The council or landowner will tell you what they need.

  • Fried fresh to order in the van at your event
  • Cod, haddock and chips, sausages and pies
  • The van comes to you: homes, venues, workplaces and fields
  • Served at the time you choose, from the hatch
