How our film set catering works in Rock

We work with your location manager or production office on access, parking and timings. For event crews and end-of-shoot parties, we can cook pie and chips, cod and chips and haddock and chips and more.

Near Rock, crews may be miles from anywhere to eat, so lunch at base matters. We bring the van and everything we need to cook, and we leave the pitch tidy when we go.

The process

Changes on the day are fine: we will adjust start times and pace. Winter shoots near Rock chase the light, which goes at about 3:55pm in December, so lunch at base is frequently in daylight but a wrap meal isn’t.

  1. You share your date, numbers and address.
  2. We check the route in and send a price.
  3. We arrive in good time to set up.
  4. Everything is fried to order as the queue moves.
  5. Service is straight from the hatch, then we pack up.

Getting ready for the day

  • Pick a flat, firm place for the van to park
  • Give us your final numbers and allergies

Working with your venue

For larger numbers, tell us how long you have for food, so we can plan how to keep the queue short. Sending people up in groups helps.

FAQs for Rock

Do you come to venues in the South Downs National Park?

Yes, though some venues in protected landscapes have extra rules for vehicles; ask your venue. We’ll follow the site rules.

How far is Rock from London?

Roughly 43 miles from the centre of London, and we cover it as standard.

Can you go on a lawn or field?

Often, if the ground is firm and dry. After heavy rain, soft grass can be a problem for any vehicle, so have a hard-surface back-up.

Do you do anything other than fish?

Yes: sausage and chips or pie and chips. Tell us roughly how many to expect.

Do you clear up afterwards?

The pitch is left as we found it. It helps to have bins near the hatch.

Where does the van go on location?

Yes, on level ground at base.

Do we need to provide equipment?

All the cooking happens in the van. Tell us about power, water and bins at the site and we will confirm what we need.

Do you have a kids’ option?

Yes. Sausage and chips is a favourite with children. Include children in your numbers.

Takeaway run or book a van?

Ordering in from a local chip shop is an option. Large orders are slow, and the food cools in the bags. A van solves that by cooking on site.

Ordering from a local shop? Call ahead and collect at the last minute. For anything more than a handful of people, a van is normally the easier option.

Looking after everyone

Allergies are taken seriously. Here’s how you can help:

  • Arrange something for anyone with needs we cannot meet
  • Send the unit base address and directions
  • Tell us about coeliac crew specifically
  • Make sure we can reach locations on the day

We clear up quickly after lunch.

A chip van wrap party is a great way to finish a shoot.

Planning the van’s spot

A fish and chip van is a vehicle, so the spot matters, and a little planning goes a long way. These are the things we check:

  • Far enough from set to keep noise down
  • A queue area clear of trucks
  • Access checked by locations

If in doubt, send us a picture of the spot and we’ll advise.

From the hatch

  • Cod and chips
  • Sausage and chips
  • Crew lunches
  • Mushy peas
  • Haddock and chips
