Funeral and wake catering in Sandown, fried fresh

A wake needs warm, simple food. Fish and chips is familiar and comforting. Popular choices include cod and chips, mushy peas and pie and chips, and typical bookings are for scattering of ashes gatherings and pub wakes.

What the van needs

No two venues are the same, so we’ll ask about yours before we confirm. Generally, we look for:

  • A clear area by the serving hatch
  • A clear way in, with no low branches, cables or narrow gates
  • Light near the van and the queue for evening service

Sandown is a more remote spot, so tell us early and we’ll plan the journey.

Not sure about the spot? Send us a photo and we’ll tell you honestly before booking.

15 questions to ask before you book

Why fried-to-order beats a buffet

Compared with a buffet, a van gives everyone a hot meal, and there is less waste when numbers are uncertain. Got a budget? Let us know, and we’ll suggest a menu and timing to match. A short menu is often the best value.

What you get with us

  • Classic food your guests already know
  • Works on wet days as well as sunny ones
  • A clear quote before booking
  • We cover Sandown and the whole of the Isle of Wight

Read our pricing or the cost guide.

Allergies and dietary needs

With a bit of planning, dietary needs are easier to handle. Here are a few tips:

  • Ask the venue about the van
  • Use the funeral director’s experience on numbers
  • Let us know of any allergies
  • Allow a little extra

Give us a contact for the day who isn’t a close family member.

Tea and coffee from the hall’s urn, or a friend’s tea table, goes well alongside.

Sandown questions

Can you serve after a service at Christ Church?

Yes, at a nearby hall, home or venue with somewhere for the van. Churches rarely have space for a catering van, so the food is typically elsewhere. Send us the address.

What about events near the coast?

Yes, of course. The cooking is inside the van, so wind does not affect it, but the queue will want shelter.

Where do you take the van?

London and South East England: Kent, Surrey, East and West Sussex, Hampshire, Berkshire, Bucks, Oxfordshire and the Isle of Wight.

Is everything cooked fresh?

It is. The fryers are in the van, so it’s fried on the spot, not cooked earlier and kept warm.

How much is fish and chip van hire?

Every booking is quoted individually, based on your numbers and timings. Tell us your date and rough numbers and we will reply with a price.

What if we don’t know numbers?

Give us your best estimate, and we will plan with a little extra.

How quickly can you come?

Wakes are often arranged quickly, so ask and we’ll reply quickly.

Do you come to Sandown?

Yes. We cover London and the South East, and Sandown is within our area and the rest of the Isle of Wight. For a quote, use our quote form.

Working with your venue

If your event is in a public place, such as a park or a street, check what permission you need first. The council or landowner will tell you what they need.

Venues often have their own rules about outside caterers and vehicles: where a van can park, access times and the paperwork they want. Tell us what your venue needs and we’ll confirm what we can provide.

What a fish and chip van costs

Your quote will be clear. The main things that affect it are:

  • Numbers
  • The length of service
  • Travel, tolls and road charges
  • Cod, haddock or both

Compared with a sit-down meal, a fish and chip van is often good value, as there’s no kitchen to hire and nothing to wash up. We will send you a quote.

Getting an accurate quote

To speed things up, tell us:

  • Your date and serving time
  • A photo of the space and the way in
  • The venue or postcode
  • Expected numbers

Every quote is worked out for your event. Give us your date first, and we will confirm whether we’re available that day.

How the day works

You’ll know we are ready when the smell of frying drifts over, about the time the first guests wander across. From then on, people come up as they’re ready. In winter, it is dark in Sandown by about 4:00pm, so an afternoon wake in winter needs lighting near the van. Summer wakes have daylight well into the evening.

  1. The family or funeral director sends us the date, place and numbers.
  2. We check the spot for the van and send a quote.
  3. Timings allow for the service and travel from it.
  4. We serve calmly from the hatch when everyone is ready.
  5. Afterwards we pack up quietly and leave the spot tidy.

Before we arrive

  • Keep space clear for guests at the hatch
  • Make sure the van can get in
  • Give us a contact for the day
